A filtering algorithm for maneuvering target tracking based on smoothing spline fitting

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Abstract and Applied Analysis. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/127643 Open Access Maneuvering target tracking is a challenge. Target's sudden speed or direction changing would make the common filtering tracker divergence. To improve the accuracy of maneuvering target tracking, we propose a tracking algorithm based on spline fitting. Curve fitting, based on historical point trace, reflects the mobility information. The innovation of this paper is assuming that there is no dynamic motion model, and prediction is only based on the curve fitting over the measured data. Monte Carlo simulation results show that, …

Abstract ID: 133 Fast and accurate 3D dose distribution computations using artificial neural networks

2017

In radiation therapy, the trade-off between accuracy and speed is the key of the algorithms used in Treatment Planning Systems (TPS). For photon beams, commercial solutions generally relies on analytic algorithms, biased Monte Carlo, or heavily parallelized Monte Carlo on Graphics Processing Units (GPU). Alternatively, we propose an algorithm using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to compute the dose distributions resulting from ionizing radiations inside a phantom [1] , [2] . We present an evolution of this platform taking into account modulated field sizes and shapes, and various orientations of the beam to the phantom. Firstly, tomodensitometry-based phantoms are created to validate the d…

Dark coupling and gauge invariance

2010

We study a coupled dark energy–dark matter model in which the energymomentum exchange is proportional to the Hubble expansion rate. The inclusion of its perturbation is required by gauge invariance. We derive the linear perturbation equations for the gauge invariant energy density contrast and velocity of the coupled fluids, and we determine the initial conditions. The latter turn out to be adiabatic for dark energy, when assuming adiabatic initial conditions for all the standard fluids. We perform a full Monte Carlo Markov Chain likelihood analysis of the model, using WMAP 7-year data.

Search for patterns by combining cosmic-ray energy and arrival directions at the Pierre Auger Observatory

2015

Energy-dependent patterns in the arrival directions of cosmic rays are searched for using data of the Pierre Auger Observatory. We investigate local regions around the highest-energy cosmic rays with E ≥ 6×1019 eV by analyzing cosmic rays with energies above E ≥ 5×1018 eV arriving within an angular separation of approximately 15∘. We characterize the energy distributions inside these regions by two independent methods, one searching for angular dependence of energy-energy correlations and one searching for collimation of energy along the local system of principal axes of the energy distribution. No significant patterns are found with this analysis. The comparison of these measurements with …

ANTARES constrains a blazar origin of two IceCube PeV neutrino events

2015

Abstract Context. The source(s) of the neutrino excess reported by the IceCube Collaboration is unknown. The TANAMI Collaboration recently reported on the multiwavelength emission of six bright, variable blazars which are positionally coincident with two of the most energetic IceCube events. Objects like these are prime candidates to be the source of the highest-energy cosmic rays, and thus of associated neutrino emission. Aims. We present an analysis of neutrino emission from the six blazars using observations with the ANTARES neutrino telescope. Methods. The standard methods of the ANTARES candidate list search are applied to six years of data to search for an excess of muons and hence th…

Recent Advances in Bayesian Inference in Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics Thanks to the MultiNest Algorithm

2012

We present a new algorithm, called MultiNest, which is a highly efficient alternative to traditional Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling of posterior distributions. MultiNest is more efficient than MCMC, can deal with highly multi-modal likelihoods and returns the Bayesian evidence (or model likelihood, the prime quantity for Bayesian model comparison) together with posterior samples. It can thus be used as an all-around Bayesian inference engine. When appropriately tuned, it also provides an exploration of the profile likelihood that is competitive with what can be obtained with dedicated algorithms.

Monte Carlo simulation of the response of ESR dosimeters added with gadolinium exposed to thermal, epithermal and fast neutrons

2009

Abstract Monte Carlo numerical calculations of the response of alanine and ammonium tartrate ESR (electron spin resonance) dosimeters exposed to neutron fields with different energy spectra are reported. Results have been obtained for various gadolinium concentrations inside the dosimeters. Furthermore, in order to simulate the in-phantom response we have carried out calculations by varying the depth of the dosimeter. We have found that a large enhancement is obtained for thermal neutrons, because of the very high capture cross section of gadolinium to thermal neutrons. A good enhancement was obtained for epithermal neutrons, whereas the sensitivity improvement in the case of fast neutron i…

Search for muon neutrinos from gamma-ray bursts with the ANTARES neutrino telescope using 2008 to 2011 data

2013

Aims. We search for muon neutrinos in coincidence with GRBs with the ANTARES neutrino detector using data from the end of 2007 to 2011. Methods. Expected neutrino fluxes were calculated for each burst individually. The most recent numerical calculations of the spectra using the NeuCosmA code were employed, which include Monte Carlo simulations of the full underlying photohadronic interaction processes. The discovery probability for a selection of 296 GRBs in the given period was optimised using an extended maximum-likelihood strategy. Results. No significant excess over background is found in the data, and 90% confidence level upper limits are placed on the total expected flux according to …

Charged-particle multiplicities in pp interactions measured with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

2011

Measurements are presented from proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of \sqrt{s} = 0.9 , 2.36 and 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events were collected using a single-arm minimum-bias trigger. The charged-particle multiplicity, its dependence on transverse momentum and pseudorapidity and the relationship between the mean transverse momentum and charged-particle multiplicity are measured. Measurements in different regions of phase space are shown, providing diffraction-reduced measurements as well as more inclusive ones. The observed distributions are corrected to well-defined phase-space regions, using model-independent corrections. The results are compared…

ATLAS measurements of the properties of jets for boosted particle searches

2012

Measurements are presented of the properties of high transverse momentum jets, produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s=7  TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35  pb−1 and were collected with the ATLAS detector in 2010. Jet mass, width, eccentricity, planar flow and angularity are measured for jets reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with distance parameters R=0.6 and 1.0, with transverse momentum pT>300  GeV and pseudorapidity |η|<2. The measurements are compared to the expectations of Monte Carlo generators that match leading-logarithmic parton showers to leading-order, or next-to-leading-order, matrix elements. The generators describ…
