No 'Honeymoon Phase' - Whose Health Benefits from Retirement and When

2017

I use a fixed effects instrumental variable approach to determine the effect retirement has on health. The exogenous variation in the probability to retire at the normal and early retirement age thresholds is exploited to instrument for the otherwise endogenous retirement decision. Six health aspects are considered: self-assessed health, depression, limitations in (instrumental) activities of daily living, mobility limitations, grip strength and number of words recalled. Using data for 10 countries from the Survey of Health, Retirement and Ageing in Europe (SHARE), I find that retiring both at the normal and early retirement eligibility ages significantly improves all health aspects, includ…

Will they, won’t they? Dream sequences and virtual consummation in the series Moonlighting

2021

The 1980s series Moonlighting was one of the first dramedies on the small screen; it took its cue from venerable genres like the screwball comedy or the hard-boiled novel (particularly The Thin Man) and translated them to television’s changing structures and aesthetics, participating in what has been termed the second Golden Age of television. However, the Nick and Norah Charles of Moonlighting, David and Maddie, were not married: on the contrary, the series was largely fuelled by the tension between the two leads, who were constantly sparring but were seemingly drawn to one another. Though this romantic tension has long been a staple of the silver screen, translating it into weekly episode…

Between “full moon and summer solstice”. The quest for transcendence in the poetry of Andrzej Busza

2019

The article is an attempt to describe the poet’s vision of human destiny, history and transcendence. Analysing poems from two poetry volumes I endeavour to present Busza’s philosophy. The poet notes and appreciates science and scientifi c achievements as well as civilisational development, although he realises that they may be dangerous for human spirituality and potentially lead to catastrophe.

Extraterrestrial soils

2011

Extraterrestrial soils may be defined as any of the solid granular crustal features of planets and moon other than those soils on planet Earth. Despite four decades of space exploration, which greatly expanded our understanding of the Solar System, there is considerable debate as to the loose covers of rocky planets and moons are soils in a pedological sense. On Earth, soil form thanks to the combined action of at least five factors: parent rock, climate, topography, living organisms and time. A few other factors can concur to drive pedogenesis. However, the necessity of biota as unavoidable soil forming factor is debated. In fact, important parts of Earth, such as the hyperarid Atacama Des…

Life in the Solar System?

2010

Europa, the smallest of the four moons of Jupiter discovered by Galileo Galilei, has attracted much speculation on whether it might be inhabited ever since it was observed by the Voyager probes. This is mostly due to the fact that water, or better said, water-ice, is the most evident feature of that world, with ice covering this interesting satellite completely, turning it into a smooth white ball.

Indication of drier periods on Mars from the chemistry and mineralogy of atmospheric dust

2005

The cover shows part of the Larry's Lookout panorama, seen from the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Spirit during its drive up Husband Hill: the summit is about 200 metres from the rover. Six papers this week report in detail on the MER mission. An Analysis compares predictions used to select a landing site with the conditions actually encountered. This ‘ground truth’ will be invaluable for interpreting future remote-sensing data. Surface chemistry suggests that the upper layer of soil may contain 1% meteoritic material. MER provides a unique glimpse of solar transits of the moons Phobos and Deimos. Rover Opportunity examined wind-related processes, and spectroscopy indicates a dry origin for …
