Mourning Missing Migrants: Ambiguous Loss and the Grief of Strangers

While the term missing refers to various instances and practices, we focus on the bodies of deceased migrants that remain unidentified, and on the inability of families to mourn someone when there is no body to grieve for. We deploy some ethnographic fragments of how Italian communities sometimes mourn those who are buried without a name and we describe the many problems of mourning someone whose fate is unknown through a discussion of the notion of ‘ambiguous loss’. Our contribution articulates some of the politics around deaths in migration by considering how missing migrants and their bodies are mourned in multiplicity. peerReviewed

A moral economy of patents: case of Finnish research universities' patent policies

The primary objective of this paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of the concept of moral economy for higher education studies through a study of Finnish research universities' patent policies. Patent policies not only stimulate the commercialization of research, they also set norms for behavior and aim to clarify how to distribute rights and responsibilities during the commercialization of research results. My main research finding is that even though institutionalized university patenting is a very recent phenomenon in Finland, policies regulating it have significant similarities to the US case. Moral distress among social workers : the role of insufficient resources

The present study examined moral distress among Finnish social workers and the role of perceived resource insufficiencies in explaining it. The aim was to shed light on this understudied phenomenon in the field of social welfare. The study focused on work-related moral distress, defined as impaired wellbeing that is connected to the continual inability to implement actions that one considers morally appropriate. The survey data were collected with an electronic questionnaire between the years 2011 and 2012. Laura-Kristiina Moilanen tarkasteli väitöskirjassaan talonpoikaisia elämänmalleja ja arvomaailmaa. Laskentatoimi ja etiikka : vertailua rahastonhoitajien ja tilintarkastajien eettisten arvojen välillä

Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli kartoittaa tilintarkastajien ja rahastonhoitajien eettisyyttä kyselyhaastattelun keinoin. Lisäksi tavoitteena oli selvittää vastaajien saama eettinen koulutus ja sen vaikutukset heidän eettisyyteensä sekä aikaisempaan tutkimukseen perustuen, mitä eettisiä arvoja vastaajat pitivät tärkeimpinä ammattinsa kannalta. Kyselyyn vastasi yhteensä 75 henkilöä, joista 41 oli tilintarkastajia ja 34 rahastonhoitajia. Tutkimukseen valitut henkilöt edustivat eri organisaatioita kattavan kokonaiskuvan saamiseksi kahdelta toimialalta.
