Human motor system

2020

Abstract This chapter deals with the general issues of motor control and coordination rather than with neurophysiological mechanisms that form the basis for natural, coordinated movements. It is useful that, before we consider the basics of motor behaviours and disorders, we introduce a general theoretical framework adequate to consider issues of control and coordination in biological systems. However, it is impossible to separate issues of control from issues of coordination during natural human movements. Hence, this chapter will also deal with coordination, exploring how individual effectors (such as muscles, joints and limbs) are made to act together in a task-specific way. Ultimately, …

Technition: When Tools Come Out of the Closet

2020

People are ambivalently enthusiastic and anxious about how far technology can go. Therefore, understanding the neurocognitive bases of the human technical mind should be a major topic of the cognitive sciences. Surprisingly, however, scientists are not interested in this topic or address it only marginally in other mainstream domains (e.g., motor control, action observation, social cognition). In fact, this lack of interest may hinder our understanding of the necessary neurocognitive skills underlying our appetence for transforming our physical environment. Here, we develop the thesis that our technical mind originates in perhaps uniquely human neurocognitive skills, namely, technical-reas…

Agility activities for children in a municipality in Norway.

2015

The aim of this study was to investigate whether agility activity with dogs can be used to motivate less active children in physical activity and how such activity is experienced by parents and handlers. Data were collected through qualitative interviews with handlers and parents of the participating children. Agility with dogs appeared to motivate less active children to participate in, and endure, demanding physical activity. Joy and bonding with the dog appeared to be key elements in the motivational process. Motivation, initiation, and sustainment of activity over time are beneficial for children.

Tactical metrics that discriminate winning, drawing and losing teams in UEFA Euro 2012®

2015

The objectives of this article are twofold: first, an innovative approach to notational analysis in football is outlined. By considering the important theoretical requirements for the analysis of sports games (like the interaction between two parties, the procedural sequence of action or the significance of tactical behaviour) the meaning of the introduced parameters, called tactical metrics, is illustrated. In a second step, the validity of this approach is tested using matches of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Euro 2012® to investigate a connection between these metrics and success. The results show that 11 tactical metrics model tactical behaviour in 4 different dimen…

A Fly-Inspired Mushroom Bodies Model for Sensory-Motor Control Through Sequence and Subsequence Learning

2016

Classification and sequence learning are relevant capabilities used by living beings to extract complex information from the environment for behavioral control. The insect world is full of examples where the presentation time of specific stimuli shapes the behavioral response. On the basis of previously developed neural models, inspired by Drosophila melanogaster, a new architecture for classification and sequence learning is here presented under the perspective of the Neural Reuse theory. Classification of relevant input stimuli is performed through resonant neurons, activated by the complex dynamics generated in a lattice of recurrent spiking neurons modeling the insect Mushroom Bodies n…

Diagnosis of Sensor Faults in PMSM and Drive System Based on Structural Analysis

2021

This paper presents a model-based fault diagnosis method to detect sensor faults in permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives based on structural analysis technique. The structural model is built based on the dynamic model of the PMSM in matrix form, including unknown variables, known variables, and faults. The Dulmage-Mendelsohn (DM) decomposition is applied to evaluate the redundancy of the model and obtain redundant testable sub-models. These testable redundant sub-models are used to form residuals to observe the system state, and distinguish between healthy and faulty conditions. This work investigates faults in eleven sensors in a PMSM drive, thus nine structured residuals are d…

The Brain Electrophysiological recording & STimulation (BEST) toolbox

2021

Abstract Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) experiments involve many recurring procedures that are not sufficiently standardized in the community. Given the diversity in experimental design and experience of the investigators, automated but yet flexible data collection and analysis tools are needed to increase objectivity, reliability, and reproducibility of NIBS experiments. The B rain E lectrophysiological recording and ST imulation (BEST) Toolbox is a MATLAB-based, open-source software with graphical user interface that allows users to design, run, and share freely configurable multi-protocol, multi-session NIBS studies, including transcranial magnetic, electric, and ultrasound stimul…

Tuning of Extended Kalman Filters for Sensorless Motion Control with Induction Motor

2019

This work deals with the tuning of an Extended Kalman Filter for sensorless control of induction motors for electrical traction in automotive. Assuming that the parameters of the induction motor-load model are known, Genetic Algorithms are used for obtaining the system noise covariance matrix, considering the measurement noise covariance matrix equal to the identity matrix. It is shown that only stator currents have to be acquired for reaching this objective, which is easy to accomplish using Hall-effect transducers. In fact, the Genetic Algorithm minimizes, with respect to the system covariance matrix, a suitable measure of the displacement between the stator currents experimentally acquir…

Dynamics-based action recognition for motor intention prediction

2020

Abstract Powered lower-limb prostheses presented in the previous chapter require a natural and easy-to-use interface for communicating amputee’s motor intention in order to select the appropriate motor program in a given context or simply to commute from an active (powered) to a passive mode of functioning. To be accepted by amputees, such an interface should (1) not put additional cognitive load on the end-user, (2) be reliable and (3) be minimally invasive. In this chapter we present one possible solution for achieving that goal: a robust method for autonomously detecting and recognizing motor intents from a wearable sensor network mounted on a sound leg. The sensor network provides a rea…

Identification of differential risk hotspots for collision and vehicle type in a directed linear network

2019

Traffic accidents can take place in very different ways and involve a substantially distinct number and types of vehicles. Thus, it is of interest to know which parts of a road structure present an overrepresentation of a specific type of traffic accident, specially for some typologies of collisions and vehicles that tend to trigger more severe consequences for the users being involved. In this study, a spatial approach is followed to estimate the risk that different types of collisions and vehicles present in the central area of Valencia (Spain), considering the accidents observed in this city during the period 2014-2017. A directed spatial linear network representing the non-pedestrian ro…
