Brassica trichocarpa (Brassicaceae), a new species from Sicily

A new species of Brassica from Sicily, namely B. trichocarpa, is described and illustrated. This suffrutex was found on a calcareous peak of a mount near Palermo, where it is represented by a single population occupying a really small surface. It is well differentiated from the other perennial species belonging to B. sect. Brassica mainly in having hairy ovary and very short, thickened, hairy, not torulose fruits. Its relationships and taxonomical position within this group are examined too. An analytical key of the current taxa belonging to the genus Brassica sect. Brassica is also provided.

The genus Stipa L. comprises over 150 species, all native to the Old World, where they grow in warm temperate regions throughout Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It is one of the largest genera in the family Poaceae in Middle Asia, where one of its diversity hotspots is located. However, identification of Middle Asian Stipa species is difficult because of the lack of new, comprehensive taxonomic studies including all of the species recorded in the region. En sciences de la terre et dans le cadre de la théorie de la tectonique des plaques, les processus orogéniques peuvent être difficiles à concevoir par des lycéens et des enseignants. Dans ce papier, on s’interroge, par le biais d’un questionnaire, sur les difficultés à la construction d’un registre explicatif de la formation des chaînes de montagnes par les apprenants. Nous confrontons aussi, dans un atelier-débat, les explications de l’orogenèse proposées par des enseignants à celles avancées par Avicenne. Les registres explicatifs des apprenants sont multiples et l’usage de l’histoire des sciences leur a permis de travailler dans un registre explicatif mobiliste.

The Pyrenean-Cantabrian Orogen arose through the collision of the Iberian and Eurasian plates, mostly in Cenozoic times. This orogen comprises two main mountain ranges, the Pyrenees to the east, and the Cantabrian Mountains to the west. Mountain building and landscape evolution are controlled by interactions between river dynamics and tectonic forces. Such interactions have been extensively studied, however a quantitative evaluation of tectonic/geomorphic feedbacks, which is imperative for understanding sediments routing within orogens and fold-and-thrust belts, remains to be undertaken. Hydraulic properties of fault zones in porous carbonates, examples from central and southern Italy

We present the results of in situ permeability measurements performed, using a portable field permeameter, on normal and strike-slip fault zones that crosscut high-porosity carbonate grainstones. The measurement sites expose in the Cretaceous Orfento Formation of the Majella Mountain (Abruzzo, Italy), and the Lower Pleistocene deposits of the Favignana Island (Sicily, Italy). Nine small-displacement, compactive shear banding-based fault zones have been tested in the field. The fault offset ranges between 10 and 200 centimeters. The Madonie: Highlands in Sicily

This chapter presents the results of the archaeological survey of selected areas across the Madonie mountain range in Sicily, at different heights. Several archaeological features have been mapped, documenting the human presence on these highlands over different millennia and dating it back at least to the Middle Neolithic. Traces of ancient cultures of Sicily have been recognized in the area, emphasizing the importance of this mountainous territory.
