Experimental study on the free transplantation of mucosa and lyophilised dura to the oral cavity

Summary The covering of epithelial defects in the oral cavity presents special problems in preprosthetic surgery, since special requisites for function and quality of mucosal grafts must be satisfied. In animal experiments mucosal defects in the oral cavity of 30 rabbits were repaired with free transplants of autologous mucosa and heterologous lyophilised dura. A comparative clinical and histological assessment of the healing processes showed that there was no essential difference between both methods. Diffusion of naltrexone across reconstituted human oral epithelium and histomorphological features

Abstract In transbuccal absorption a major limitation could be the low permeability of the mucosa which implies low drug bioavailability. The ability of naltrexone hydrochloride (NLX) to penetrate a resembling histologically human buccal mucosa was assessed and the occurrence of any histomorphological changes observed. Release of naltrexone on buccal mucosa: Permeation studies, histological aspects and matrix system design

Transbuccal drug delivery has got several well-known advantages especially with respect to peroral way. Since a major limitation in buccal drug delivery could be the low permeability of the epithelium, the aptitude of NLX to penetrate the mucosal barrier was assessed. Effect of c-Met expression on survival in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

The proto-oncogene c-Met has been suggested to be associated with progression of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. The aims of the present study were to assess the prevalence of c-Met expression in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and to verify whether c-Met can be considered a marker of prognosis in these patients. In a retrospective study, a cohort of 84 OSCC patients was investigated for c-Met expression and its cellular localization by immunohistochemistry. B-mode versus A-mode ultrasonographic measurements of mucosal thickness in vivo

Abstract Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the measurement accuracy of A-mode and B-mode ultrasonographic assessments of palatal masticatory mucosal thickness in vivo. Study Design: Thickness of palatal masticatory mucosa in the molar region of 50 volunteers was measured once with a B-mode ultrasound device (10 MHz) combined with a standoff for intraoral applications. Diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma and its precursor lesions

Improvement of survival rate and quality of life after treatment of oral squamous cell carcinoma as well as cost reduction requires reliable early diagnosis of the tumor and its precursor lesions. Four different screening methods are primarily employed: toluidine blue staining (visually detected lesions: sensitivity 70-100%, specificity 25-67%), photodynamic diagnosis (sensitivity 94-99%, specificity 60-89%), autofluorescence (no data published so far) and modern oral cytology (sensitivity 80%,specificity 95-100%). Lack of association between proliferative verrucous leukoplakia and human papillomavirus infection.

Purpose To analyze proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in different stages of the disease. Materials and Methods We studied 13 patients with PVL. In 10 patients (76.9%), a lesional biopsy was taken and frozen at −40°C. Four patients were instructed to mouth rinse with sterile sera. The biopsy and rinse samples were analyzed for HPV by PCR. Results We did not detect HPV infection in the PVL tissue or in the oral rinse of any of the 13 patients in any stage of the disease analyzed, neither in oral squamous cell carcinoma nor in the simple hyperkeratosis. Conclusion There was no association between PVL and HPV infection in our patients.

Intraoral lipomas: A clinicopathological study of 43 cases, including four cases of spindle cell/pleomorphic subtype

Background The aim of this study was to describe the clinicopathological characteristics of 43 intraoral lipomas and classify them according to their microscopic variants. Material and Methods All the cases of intraoral lipomas diagnosed at an Oral Pathology service were selected for the study. Clinical data, such as age, gender, location, time of evolution, clinical presentation, clinical hypothesis of diagnosis, and treatment, were collected from the clinical files.
