Forecasting container transshipment in Germany

2009

International audience; In this paper, we examine container transshipment at German ports using the seasonal ARIMA (SARIMA) model and the Holt-Winters exponential smoothing approach. Our models are designed especially to take account of the seasonal behavior of the quarterly data used. We consider the dynamic development in this sector for the whole container throughput and also the destinations Asia, Europe and North America, which are the world's three main economic regions. Our data runs from the first quarter of 1989 to the fourth quarter of 2006. We provide detailed quarterly forecasts for the year 2007 and 2008. According to forecasting error measures such as Mean Square Error and The…

Data-based modeling of vehicle collisions by nonlinear autoregressive model and feedforward neural network

2013

Vehicle crash test is the most direct and common method to assess vehicle crashworthiness. Visual inspection and obtained measurements, such as car acceleration, are used, e.g. to examine impact severity of an occupant or to assess overall car safety. However, those experiments are complex, time-consuming, and expensive. We propose a method to reproduce car kinematics during a collision using nonlinear autoregressive (NAR) model which parameters are estimated by the use of feedforward neural network. NAR model presented in this study is derived from the more general one - nonlinear autoregressive with moving average (NARMA). Suitability of autoregressive systems for data-based modeling was …

Were the chaotic ELMs in TCV the result of an ARMA process?

2004

The results of a previous paper claiming the demonstration that edge localized mode (ELM) dynamics on TCV are chaotic in a number of cases has recently been called into question, because the statistical test employed was found to also identify linear auto regressive—moving average (ARMA) models as chaotic. The TCV ELM data has therefore been re-examined with an improved method that is able to make this distinction, and the ARMA model is found to be an inappropriate description of the dynamics on TCV. The hypothesis that ELM dynamics are chaotic on TCV in a number of cases is therefore still favoured.

Measurements of relativistic time dilatation for positive and negative muons in a circular orbit

1977

The lifetimes of both positive and negative relativistic (γ = 29.33) muons have been measured in the CERN Muon Storage Ring with the results τ+ = 64.419 (58) µs, τ− = 64.368 (29) µs The value for positive muons is in accordance with special relativity and the measured lifetime at rest: the Einstein time dilation factor agrees with experiment with a fractional error of 2×10−3 at 95% confidence. Assuming special relativity, the mean proper lifetime for μ− is found to be τ0− = 2.1948(10) µs the most accurate value reported to date. The agreement of this value with previously measured values of τ0+ confirms CPT invariance for the weak interaction in muon decay.

A correction method for the analysis of continuous linear one-dimensional systems under moving loads

2008

A new correction procedure for dynamic analysis of linear, proportionally damped, continuous systems under traveling concentrated loads is proposed; both cases of non-parametric (moving forces) and parametric (moving mass) loads are considered. Improvement in the evaluation of the dynamic response is obtained by separating the contribution of the low-frequency (LF) modes from that of the high-frequency (HF) modes. The former is calculated, as usual, by classical modal analysis, while the latter is taken into account using a new series expansion of the corresponding particular solution. The advantage of the suggested method is immediately shown in the calculation of the stress distribution s…

Radio detection of the young binary HD 160934

2013

Precise determination of dynamical masses of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars is essential to calibrate stellar evolution models that are widely used to derive theoretical masses of young low-mass objects. Binary stars in young, nearby loose associations are particularly good candidates for this calibration since all members share a common age. Interestingly, some of these young binaries present a persistent and compact radio emission, which makes them excellent targets for astrometric VLBI studies. We aim to monitor the orbital motion of the binary system HD 160934, a member of the AB Doradus moving group. We observed HD 160934 with the Very Large Array and the European VLBI Network at 8.4 an…

Radio Emission from Binary Stars in the AB Doradus Moving Group

2015

AbstractPrecise determination of dynamical masses of pre-main-sequence stars is essential for calibrating stellar evolution models, that are widely used to derive theoretical masses of young low-mass objects. We have determined the individual masses of the pair AB Dor Ba/Bb using Australian Long Baseline Array observations and archive infrared data, as part of a larger program directed to monitor binary systems in the AB Doradus moving group. We have detected, for the first time, compact radio emission from both stars. This has allowed us to determine the orbital parameters of both the relative and absolute orbits and, consequently, their individual dynamical masses: 0.28±0.05 M⊙ and 0.25±0…

Solutions of elliptic equations with a level surface parallel to the boundary: stability of the radial configuration

2016

A positive solution of a homogeneous Dirichlet boundary value problem or initial-value problems for certain elliptic or parabolic equations must be radially symmetric and monotone in the radial direction if just one of its level surfaces is parallel to the boundary of the domain. Here, for the elliptic case, we prove the stability counterpart of that result. We show that if the solution is almost constant on a surface at a fixed distance from the boundary, then the domain is almost radially symmetric, in the sense that is contained in and contains two concentric balls $${B_{{r_e}}}$$ and $${B_{{r_i}}}$$ , with the difference r e -r i (linearly) controlled by a suitable norm of the deviation…

Solids and Hydraulic Retention Time Effect on N2O Emission from Moving-Bed Membrane Bioreactors

2018

Biological nutrient removal was operated at different solids (SRT) and hydraulic retention times (HRT) in order to assess their influence on nitrous oxide (N2O) emission from a hybrid moving-bed membrane bioreactor. The observed results show that the N2O production decreased when the SRT/HRT was decreased. The maximum N2O gaseous concentration was measured in the aerobic reactor at the end of phase I, and it decreased through phases II and III. From mass balances over the reactors of the system, the aerated (aerobic and membrane) reactors were the largest producers of N2O, showing that the greater part of N2O was produced during the nitrification process.
