“Dumb” pH-Independent and Biocompatible Hydrogels Formed by Copolymers of Long-Chain Alkyl Glycidyl Ethers and Ethylene Oxide
2020
The formation and rheological properties of hydrogels based on amphiphilic ABA triblock polyether copolymers are described, relying solely on the hydrophobic interaction of long-chain alkyl glycidyl ether (AlkGE)- based A-blocks that are combined with a hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) midblock. Via anionic ring-opening copolymerization (AROP), ethylene oxide (EO) and long-chain alkyl glycidyl ethers (AlkGEs) were copolymerized, using deprotonated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) macroinitiators (Mn of 10, 20 kg mol-1). The polymerization afforded amphiphilic ABA triblock copolymers with molar masses in the range of 21-32 kg mol-1 and dispersities (Đ) of Đ = 1.07-1.17. Kinetic studies rev…
Long-Chain Alkyl Epoxides and Glycidyl Ethers: An Underrated Class of Monomers.
2020
Long-chain epoxides and specifically alkyl glycidyl ethers represent a class of highly hydrophobic monomers for anionic ring-opening polymerization (AROP), resulting in apolar aliphatic polyethers. In contrast, poly(ethylene glycol) is known for its high solubility in water. The combination of hydrophobic and hydrophilic monomers in block and statistical copolymerization reactions enables the synthesis of amphiphilic polyethers for a wide range of purposes, utilizing micellar interactions in aqueous solutions, e.g., viscosity enhancement of aqueous solutions, formation of supramolecular hydrogels, or for polymeric surfactants. Controlled polymerization of these highly hydrophobic long-chain…
Fast Access to Amphiphilic Multiblock Architectures by the Anionic Copolymerization of Aziridines and Ethylene Oxide.
2018
An ideal system for stimuli-responsive and amphiphilic (block) polymers would be the copolymerization of aziridines with epoxides. However, to date, no copolymerization of these two highly strained three-membered heterocycles had been achieved. Herein, we report the combination of the living oxy- and azaanionic ring-opening polymerization of ethylene oxide (EO) and sulfonamide-activated aziridines. In a single step, well-defined amphiphilic block copolymers are obtained by a one-pot copolymerization. Real-time 1H NMR spectroscopy revealed the highest difference in reactivity ratios ever reported for an anionic copolymerization (with r1 = 265 and r2 = 0.004 for 2-methyl- N-tosylaziridine/EO …
Introducing an amine functionality at the block junction of amphiphilic block copolymers by anionic polymerization strategies
2011
A series of block copolymers bearing a single amino in-chain functionality was synthesized via anionic polymerization of styrene and ethylene oxide. By means of both a conventional and a continuous setup, living polystyrene was quantitatively end functionalized with an oxirane (DBAG) prior to the polymerization of the poly(ethylene oxide) segment. The in-chain amine was conjugated with a fluorescent dye.
A taxonomic revision helps to clarify differences between the Atlantic invasive
2017
Abstract Ptilohyale explorator (formerly Parhyale explorator), described by Arresti (1989), can be considered to be a synonym of west-Atlantic Ptilohyale littoralis (Stimpson, 1853), based on morphological observations of paratypes and specimens recently collected in the type locality of Ptilohyale explorator. The first collections of Ptilohyale littoralis, from the eastern Atlantic were from the port of Rotterdam (The Netherlands) in 2009 and later in Wimereux, Opal Coast (France) in 2014; however, the synonymy of Ptilohyale explorator with Ptilohyale littoralis backdates to the first European record of Ptilohyale littoralis in 1985 at La Vigne, Bay of Arcachon (France). This indicates tha…
The Exosomes-derived EGFR Ligand Amphiregulin (AREG) is a new key player in Multiple Myeloma Bone Destruction
Self-cleaning antimicrobial surfaces by bio-enabled growth of SnO2 coatings on glass.
2013
Conventional vapor-deposition techniques for coatings require sophisticated equipment and/or high-temperature resistant substrates. Therefore bio-inspired techniques for the fabrication of inorganic coatings have been developed in recent years. Inspired by the biology behind the formation of the intricate skeletons of diatoms orchestrated by a class of cationic polyamines (silaffins) we have used surface-bound spermine, a naturally occurring polyamine, to promote the fast deposition of homogeneous, thin and transparent biomimetic SnO2 coatings on glass surfaces. The bio-enabled SnO2 film is highly photoactive, i.e. it generates superoxide radicals (O2˙(-)) upon sunlight exposure resulting i…
Mafic and ultra-mafic enclaves from Ustica island lava: inferences on deep magmatic processes
2005
Ustica Island, southern Tyrrhenian Sea, is constituted of Quaternary alkaline volcanics. Avariety of enclaves representative of deep to supra-crustal settings were recently found in a hawaiitic lava flow. Enclaves consist of: (i) Ultramafic meta-cumulates, i.e. clinopyroxenites and wherlites characterized by variably deformed porphyroclastic to granoblastic textures. (ii) Mafic cumulates, i.e. gabbros (F amphibole) and troctolites, the first often characterized by frequent amphibole breakdown coronas (olivine+Tiaugite+ plagioclase+magnetite+ilmenite+rhfnite) in response to an H2O decrease during the ascent, while the troctolites interpreted as meta-cumulates. (iii) Microsyenites, consist of…
Evolution of the middle Paleozoic magmatism in the Chinese Altai: Constraints on the crustal differentiation at shallow depth in the accretionary oro…
2019
Abstract The Chinese Altai underwent intensive mafic and felsic magmatism in the middle Paleozoic, which was the most important magmatic event in the region. It is still unclear for the role of the event in formation of the crust that is thick (∼56 km) and has structure of three-layer stratification. In this study, the data for the middle Paleozoic mafic rocks and granites are comprehensively compiled and integrated with new geochronological, petrological, geochemical and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic data for gabbroic rocks from Keketuohai area and tonalite and biotite granites from Habahe area. The middle Paleozoic mafic rocks exhibit two evolutionary trends, which can be defined as high-Al and low-A…
Dikerogammarus villosus (Crustacea : Amphipoda): another invasive species in Lake Geneva
2004
According to field observations performed in 2002 and 2003, the amphipod species Dikerogammarus villosus (Sowinsky, 1894) is now well established in Lake Geneva. The author predicts that this and future invasions by D. villosus will have serious effects on freshwater ecosystems.
