Pulmonary Hypertension and Thromboembolic Disease

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a disease group that includes a wide variety of entities leading to an increased pulmonary arterial pressure. This chapter describes the basic mechanisms that lead to PH and the possibilities of MRI in diagnosing different aspects. A MR imaging protocol is provided making MRI a comprehensive modality for the classification of the underlying disease and assessment of hemodynamics.

Hepatocellular carcinoma: Diagnostic imaging criteria

The diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) can be reached noninvasively on imaging in patients at high risk as discussed in chapter “Hepatocellular carcinoma: Diagnostic Guidelines.” In this chapter, we describe the CT and MR imaging criteria more commonly used in the guidelines for the diagnosis and management of patients with HCC, including arterial phase hyperenhancement, washout, capsule, growth, and hypointensity on hepatobiliary phase MR imaging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the applicability, sensitivity, and predictive power of diffusion-weighted MR imaging (DWI) in the diagnosis of vertebrobasilar infarction. From 1997 to 2002, we prospectively recruited 268 patients with acute signs and symptoms suspective of vertebrobasilar ischemia. The patients underwent biplanar EPI-T2 and EPI DWI within 24 h after onset of symptoms and high-resolution MRI as a control within 7 days. One hundred twenty-one patients had additional CT scanning. The DWI revealed acute vertebrobasilar infarction in 71.0%. The mean time exposure of DWI was 8 min and thus no more than that of CT imaging. It showed significantly more acute lesions than CT …

MR Imaging of Perianal Crohn Disease: The Role of Contrast-enhanced Sequences

The MR imaging protocol described by the authors includes contrast-enhanced T1-weighted imaging with fat saturation in all patients except those with poor renal function. Horsthuis et al demonstrated in 2009 the usefulness of contrast-enhanced MR imaging for determining disease activity. Contrast agent administration is also required in case of suspicion of neoplastic tissue complicating fistulas. PURPOSE To describe the MR imaging findings in patients with lateral patellar dislocation. MATERIAL AND METHODS The MRIs of 31 patients with patellar dislocation were evaluated retrospectively. Arthroscopic surgery was performed in 23 cases. RESULTS Hemarthrosis was found in 30/31, contusions of the lateral femoral condyle in 30/31 and of the medial patellar facet in 26/31 cases. Injury of the medial patellar retinaculum was seen in 28/31 cases. Osteochondral fractures were found in 18 patients; compared to arthroscopy there were one false-positive and 5 false-negative findings concerning loose cartilage bodies. The association of uterus didelphys and unilateral blind vagina with ipsilateral renal agenesis is an infrequent urogenital malformation distinguished by a lesion of the mesonephric duct. In most patients, symptoms are present at the beginning of the menstrual cycle because a transverse vaginal septum on one side obstructs the flow of menses, which consequently collect.
