Are we "experienced listeners"? A review of the musical capacities that do not depend on formal musical training.

The present paper reviews a set of studies designed to investigate different aspects of the capacity for processing Western music. This includes perceiving the relationships between a theme and its variations, perceiving musical tensions and relaxations, generating musical expectancies, integrating local structures in large-scale structures, learning new compositional systems and responding to music in an emotional (affective) way. The main focus of these studies was to evaluate the influence of intensive musical training on these capacities. Tragédia carioca em três atos (1954) kann sowohl als Klassiker brasilianischer Literatur als auch als Weltliteratur betrachtet werden. Vinicius verknüpft den griechischen Stoff mit afrobrasilianischer Kultur, Musikstücken, die später zu Bossa Nova-Klassiker wurden und inszeniert einen schwarzen Orpheus auf einem Favelahügel in Rio de Janeiro. ABSTRACT: Although the historical and artistic significance of the Lonja (Guildhall) of the Merchants of Valencia is undeniable, up until now there has been no detailed study of the decoration of the vaults over the old Merchant’s Chapel and the Chamber of Trade. The vaults form a unitary visual program in which fifty-two angels are depicted praying, carrying various objects and playing a wide repertoire of musical instruments. This article analyzes the visualization of heavenly music in the Lonja through the iconographic subject of the musician angel. This article surveys various vocal and instrumental performances (chants, laments, calls, sounds of church bells and drums, band music) connected to the ritual celebration and commemoration of the dead that are still characterized in Sicily by a manifest syncretism between Christian Church rules and folk customs and beliefs. These “sounds of mourning” are examined in terms of both their musical aspects and their social and symbolic functions, with special attention given to the changing dynamics between the present day and the recent past.
