RIPHeart (Remote Ischemic Preconditioning for Heart Surgery) Study: Myocardial Dysfunction, Postoperative Neurocognitive Dysfunction, and 1 Year Foll…

2018

Background Remote ischemic preconditioning ( RIPC ) has been suggested to protect against certain forms of organ injury after cardiac surgery. Previously, we reported the main results of RIPHeart (Remote Ischemic Preconditioning for Heart Surgery) Study, a multicenter trial randomizing 1403 cardiac surgery patients receiving either RIPC or sham‐ RIPC . Methods and Results In this follow‐up paper, we present 1‐year follow‐up of the composite primary end point and its individual components (all‐cause mortality, myocardial infarction, stroke and acute renal failure), in a sub‐group of patients, intraoperative myocardial dysfunction assessed by transesophageal echocardiography and the incidenc…

Metastatic Versus Osteoporotic Vertebral Fractures on MRI: A Blinded, Multicenter, and Multispecialty Observer Agreement Evaluation.

2020

Background: MRI is assumed to be valid for distinguishing metastatic vertebral fractures (MVFs) from osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVFs). This study assessed (1) concordance between the image-based diagnosis of MVF versus OVF and the reference (biopsy or follow-up of >6 months), (2) interobserver and intraobserver agreement on key imaging findings and the diagnosis of MVF versus OVF, and (3) whether disclosing a patient’s history of cancer leads to variations in diagnosis, concordance, or agreement. Patients and Methods: This retrospective cohort study included clinical data and imaging from 203 patients with confirmed MVF or OVF provided to 25 clinicians (neurosurgeons, radiologists…

Multizentrische Phase II — Studie der Arbeitsgruppe Lebermetastasen zur wöchentlichen intraarteriellen 24 h Hochdosistherapie mit 5-FU und Folinsäure…

1998

This prospective multicenter trial was performed to determine the response rate, toxicity and applicability of continuous 24 h hepatic arterial infusion of high-dose 5-FU and folinic acid. An improved response rate (60.5% in non-pretreated patients) was however associated with many systemic side-effects (340/509), mainly nausea and diarrhea. Therefore this treatment should be applied only in selected patients in specialized centers.

Tu1253 How Safe Is Sedation in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy? a Prospective Multicenter Trial: an Interim Analysis of 73,941 Endoscopies. Data From Pros…

2013

were those plausibly associated with the procedure and severe enough for the patient to seek medical attention. We compared the proportion of patients with adverse events associated with gastrointestinal endoscopy identified with direct patient contact to the proportion identified through our current infrastructure using the chi-square statistic. Results: During the study period, 11,710 endoscopic procedures were performed on 9,683 patients. Our study personnel made 3205 calls over a three month period and ultimately made contact with 1999 (17%; 84.5% of those called) patients. 28 (1.4%) adverse events were identified through direct patient contact. Our adverse event tracking infrastructure…

Does the Artery-first Approach Improve the Rate of R0 Resection in Pancreatoduodenectomy? A Multicenter, Randomized, Controlled Trial

2019

[Objective]: To compare the rates of R0 resection in pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) for pancreatic and periampullary malignant tumors by means of standard (ST-PD) versus artery-first approach (AFA-PD). [Background]: Standardized histological examination of PD specimens has shown that most pancreatic resections thought to be R0 resections are R1. “Artery-first approach” is a surgical technique characterized by meticulous dissection of arterial planes and clearing of retropancreatic tissue in an attempt to achieve a higher rate of R0. To date, studies comparing AFA-PD versus ST-PD are retrospective cohort or case-control studies. [Methods]: A multicenter, randomized, controlled trial was conducte…

Incidence and Management Of Venous Thrombosis In Acute Leukemia: A Multicenter Study

2013

Abstract Background Venous thrombosis (VT) frequently complicates the clinical course of cancer. Reported incidence of VT in many hematological neoplasms is up to 10%, a value comparable to that of solid tumors. Available data on the incidence and management of VT in Acute Leukemia (AL) are scanty and quite discordant. We have performed a multicenter retrospective study with the primary objective to evaluate the incidence of venous thrombotic complications in a population of patients with AL. Secondary objective was to evaluate the management of these complications in patients with AL. Materials and Methods Available clinical records of out and in-patients diagnosed with AL from January 200…

Sustained Responses and Resistance to Imatinib Mesylate in the First 173 Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Patients Accrued by the SCREEN Multicenter Study: F…

2009

Abstract Abstract 4276 Introduction Imatinib mesylate (IM) has shown unprecedented effectiveness in the treatment of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) patients (pts) in the chronic phase of the disease. As most of the data concerning the efficacy of the drug derive either from a single sponsored trial or from single institution reports, we decided to accrue all CML pts diagnosed in the Italian region of Sicily to the observational SCREEN (Siciliy CML Regional Enterprise) study, to evaluate the hematological, cytogenetic and molecular responses of this unselected population to IM. Patients and Methods Although the study is still ongoing, 173 consecutive CML pts have been enrolled between Januar…
