‘So close, yet so different’ – reflections on the multicultural course of Slavic languages

2019

The complexity of language learning may be expanded to learning the languages belonging to the same language family, for example, Slavic languages. This paper reports on the reflection-on action research aimed at the increase of learners’ multicultural competence and enhancement of critical thinking at the interdisciplinary, blended course of Slavic languages and cultures. The course organized in modules is implemented in Moodle. Course content is designed by the teacher; however, Slavic languages are presented by native speakers of these languages. Learners have an opportunity to get familiar with Slavic languages, history, and culture from the presenters’ perspective, what generally resul…

Colonie, Imperi e Migrazioni. Un inquadramento postcoloniale dell'Europa multiculturale

2012

The article considers the multicultural roots of the European Union from a postcolonial perspective. Therefore, European history is outlined from colonialism to imperialism, concluding with recent regulations on international migration. The etymology of the terms colony and culture, both derived from the Latin verb colĕre (to cultivate), is the link that connects these themes, highlighting a conception of the relationship between Europeans and the otherness based on exploitation and domination. Through this view, differential colonialism merges with social self representation (antropopoiesi) inherent in the concepts of culture and education and already disclosed by the Greek paideia.

2011

This article discusses didactic choises in A Multicultural School with a fair pedagogy. The concept of fair pedagogy scrutinizes the curriculum, the support of the teachers, the working methods, evaluation and communication of the school. As an increasing part of the students within vocational education having immigrant backgrounds are adults, their education should be seen from adult pedagogical perspective. Results concerning equitable pedagogy, based on an empirical research at four colleges of social and healthcare vocational education, are presented. The data was collected 2000-2001 through interviews, observations and by a questionnaire. The material was analysed qualitatively by usin…

Freedom, Civility and Activeness. On the government of leisure self-formation of Finnish multicultural youth

2012

This article explores the leisure time and civic activities of ‘multicultural youth’ in Finland. The theoretic-conceptual framework is the Foucauldian governmentality approach and Foucault's four step model of the ethical self-formation of the moral subject. This toolkit exposes how the subjectivation of the multicultural youth takes place in their leisure time activities and civic action, and connects and disconnects with the desires and expectations of administration and youth workers. The leisure time subjectivation of the youth implements on the interface of their own ‘self-driven’ activities and interests and more or less programmatic governance of official youth work with its integrat…
