AbstractThis article is about navigating asylum, employment and language policy in a new country as an asylum seeker. Through the story of one individual, we show that profound inequalities are exacerbated when forced migrants are limited in their choice of language they might study or use. The individual is Tailor F, an Iraqi man seeking asylum, and the country is Finland, officially bilingual, with a majority language (Finnish) and a minority language (Swedish). KiMo on lyhenne kielitietoisuutta ja monikielisyyttä tukevan pedagogiikan koulutusmallista. KiMo-opinnoissa tutkitaan ja ratkotaan ajankohtaisia monikielisen ja -kulttuurisen koulun ja varhaiskasvatuksen kehittämishaasteita yli tiedekunta- ja laitosrajojen. Tämä uusi koulutusmalli murtaa koulutuksen rajaaitoja, kun varhaiskasvatuksen opettajaopiskelijat, luokanopettaja-opiskelijat ja kieltenopettajaopiskelijat työskentelevät yhdessä. Opettajuutta rakennetaan tutkivalla otteella, yhteisöllisesti ja yhteistyössä muun muassa päiväkotien, koulujen, vanhempien ja kolmannen sektorin toimijoiden kanssa. nonPeerReviewed

Maternal parenting styles, homework help, and children’s literacy development in language minority and Finnish-speaking families

The aim of this study was to examine the role of mothers’ (language minority mothers, LM, n = 49, and Finnish-speaking mothers, MP, n = 368) parenting styles and maternal help with their children’s homework in the children’s (mean age 11.43 years) literacy skills at fourth grade in Finland. In addition, the moderating effect of a child’s gender on this relationship was investigated. The results showed that the LM mothers used psychological control more than MP mothers. Furthermore, the more LM mothers used warmth and psychological styles of parenting, the more they helped their daughters, not sons, with homework. This work focuses on the study of the meanings conveyed by two visual perception verbs (mirar and veure) in Central Catalan within the theoretical framework of cognitive semantics. Our objective is twofold: (i) to analyze and describe them in order to establish metaphorical and metonymic semantic projections; and (ii) to determine the intralinguistic distribution of the non-prototypical meanings of these verbs. This study explores the stances that multilingual learners adopt in the face of a monolingual, “English-only” norm in a primary English medium class in Finland. I examine classroom interaction focusing on three students and the ways in which they reinterpret, reformulate, and contest this norm. This research is informed by the perspective of language socialization and draws on methods of microethnographic discourse analysis.
