Orthogonal Multicarrier Transmission with Modal Channel Estimation

2009

A novel multi-carrier orthogonal transmission scheme is presented. While being simpler to implement, it has a spectral efficiency and design parameters similar to those of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing based on Offset Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (OFDM/OQAM). A parametric channel estimation technique is subsequently reported. The proposed technique is based on an algorithm obtained from classic Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) by relaxation of the hypothesis on the number of measurements with respect to the number of sensors. Numerical simulations show that our proposal outperforms previous works in this field.

Configurable low-cost plotter device for fabrication of multi-color sub-cellular scale microarrays.

2014

We report on the construction and operation of a low-cost plotter for fabrication of microarrays for multiplexed single-cell analyses. The printing head consists of polymeric pyramidal pens mounted on a rotation stage installed on an aluminium frame. This construction enables printing of microarrays onto glass substrates mounted on a tilt stage, controlled by a Lab-View operated user interface. The plotter can be assembled by typical academic workshops from components of less than 15 000 Euro. The functionality of the instrument is demonstrated by printing DNA microarrays on the area of 0.5 squared centimeters using up to three different oligonucleotides. Typical feature sizes are 5 μm diam…

Broad spectrum of Fabry disease manifestation in an extended Spanish family with a new deletion in the GLA gene

2012

Background. Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked inherited disease based on the absence or reduction of lysosomal-galactosidase (Gla) activity. The enzymatic defect results in progressive impairment of cerebrovascular, renal and cardiac function. Normally, female heterozygote mutation carriers are less strongly affected than male hemizygotes aggravating disease diagnosis. Method. Close examination of the patients by renal biopsy, echo- and electrocardiography and MRI. Blood work and subsequent DNA analysis were carried out utilizing approved protocols for PCR and Sequencing. MLPA analysis was done to unveil deletions within the GLA gene locus. Quantitative detection of Glycolipids in patient p…

Analysis of artificially degraded DNA using STRs and SNPs—results of a collaborative European (EDNAP) exercise

2005

Recently, there has been much debate about what kinds of genetic markers should be implemented as new core loci that constitute national DNA databases. The choices lie between conventional STRs, ranging in size from 100 to 450 bp; mini-STRs, with amplicon sizes less than 200 bp; and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). There is general agreement by the European DNA Profiling Group (EDNAP) and the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes (ENFSI) that the reason to implement new markers is to increase the chance of amplifying highly degraded DNA rather than to increase the discriminating power of the current techniques. A collaborative study between nine European and US laboratories…

Analysis of 29 Y-chromosome SNPs in a single multiplex useful to predict the geographic origin of male lineages

2006

Abstract The European Consortium “High throughput analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms for the forensic identification of persons—SNPforID” has performed a selection of candidate Y-chromosome SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) for making inferences on the geographic origin of an unknown sample. A “Major Y chromosome haplogroup typing kit” has been developed, which allows the multiplex amplification of 29 SNPs in a single reaction followed by a single base extension (SBE) reaction (minisequencing) and separation of the resulting extension products by capillary electrophoresis.

Wireless OFDM-OQAM with a small number of subcarriers

2008

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing based on offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM-OQAM) is a multicarrier signaling technique which trades off robustness for spectral efficiency when compared to conventional OFDM with a cyclic prefix. In this paper, a novel matrix model for passband OFDM-OQAM signaling with a small number of subcarriers over a multipath frequency selective fading channel is presented. Specifically, in OFDM-OQAM a frequency selective channel is divided into many smaller but still frequency selective overlapping channels, so approximating the frequency response of a subchannel by the channel frequency response sampled at the subcarrier frequency may be inadequa…

A simple joint estimation-detection technique for OFDM systems

2005

In this work a simple approach for the joint estimation-detection in a frequency selective severe fading environment of OFDM signals adopting PSK constellations is presented. A linear predictor of suitable order is adopted for the channel estimation in the frequency domain. The predictor coefficients are estimated on the basis of a sample estimation of the autocorrelation of the channel frequency response, aided by a preliminary differential decoding, in a blockwise manner. The detection technique proposed here is based on a simple tree search where a small number of best survivor paths are maintained at each step. Despite the simplicity of above detection approach, the simulation results s…

Maximizing network capacity in an heterogeneous macro-micro cellular scenario

2011

The problem of resource allocation in cellular networks has been traditionally faced at two different levels: at the network level, in terms of frequency planning and reuse pattern design, and at the cell level, in terms of cell capacity optimizations based on channel-dependent scheduling, link adaptation, power control, and so on. While this second aspect has been deeply investigated in literature, the first aspect has been mainly faced with static or semi-dynamic reuse utilization solutions. In this paper we deal with the problem of multi-cellular resource allocation in heterogeneous OFDMA environments with reuse factor equal to 1, where base stations with different power constraints coex…

Forensic animal DNA typing: Allele nomenclature and standardization of 14 feline STR markers

2014

Since the domestic cat (Felis catus) has become one of the most popular pets and owners usually develop a close relationship to their cats, it is necessary to take traces of cats into account for forensic casework. For this purpose feline short tandem (STR) repeat markers have been investigated in several earlier studies, but no detailed description of sequence data, allelic variations or a repeat-based nomenclature is available. The aim of the study was to provide a suggestion for the allele nomenclature of 14 cat STR markers according to the recommendations of the International Society for Forensic Genetics (ISFG) for human DNA typing and to present a standardized system for a secure DNA …
