Characterization of SiPM properties at liquid nitrogen temperature

SiPM operation at cryogenic temperatures fails for many common devices. A particular type with deep channels in the silicon substrate instead of quenching resistors was thoroughly characterized from room temperature down to liquid nitrogen temperature by illuminating it with low light levels. The devices were mounted in vacuum with the temperature stabilized to allow long-term operation. SiPM signals from a LED pulser were acquired with single-pixel resolution. Generalized fits to the charge collection spectra were used to extract properties like single-pixel gain, inter-pixel variation, breakdown voltage, and photon detection efficiency. Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory for detecting the early photons from gamma-ray bursts

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous transient events with short intense flashes that have been detected in random directions in the sky once or twice per day. Their durations have been measured in seconds, especially short GRBs with duration of < 2 sec. The Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) space mission aims to detect the earliest moments of an explosion which presents the nature of GRBs, resulting into the enhancement of GRB mechanism understanding. Prototyping the PANDA Barrel DIRC

The design of the Barrel DIRC detector for the future PANDA experiment at FAIR contains several important improvements compared to the successful BABAR DIRC, such as focusing and fast timing. To test those improvements as well as other design options a prototype was build and successfully tested in 2012 with particle beams at CERN. The prototype comprises a radiator bar, focusing lens, mirror, and a prism shaped expansion volume made of synthetic fused silica. Nonlinear analysis of classical phase-locked loops in signal's phase space

Abstract Discovery of undesirable hidden oscillations, which cannot be found by the standard simulation, in phase-locked loop (PLL) showed the importance of consideration of nonlinear models and development of rigorous analytical methods for their analysis. In this paper for various signal waveforms, analytical computation of multiplier/mixer phase-detector characteristics is demonstrated, and nonlinear dynamical model of classical analog PLL is derived. Approaches to the rigorous nonlinear analysis of classical analog PLL are discussed.

The AX-PET demonstrator—Design, construction and characterization

Abstract Axial PET is a novel geometrical concept for Positron Emission Tomography (PET), based on layers of long scintillating crystals axially aligned with the bore axis. The axial coordinate is obtained from arrays of wavelength shifting (WLS) plastic strips placed orthogonally to the crystals. This article describes the design, construction and performance evaluation of a demonstrator set-up which consists of two identical detector modules, used in coincidence. Each module comprises 48 LYSO crystals of 100 mm length and 156 WLS strips. Crystals and strips are readout by Geiger-mode Avalanche Photo Diodes (G-APDs). Nonlinear concave-convex problems with indefinite weight

We consider a parametric nonlinear Robin problem driven by the p-Laplacian and with a reaction having the competing effects of two terms. One is a parametric (Formula presented.) -sublinear term (concave nonlinearity) and the other is a (Formula presented.) -superlinear term (convex nonlinearity). We assume that the weight of the concave term is indefinite (that is, sign-changing). Using the Nehari method, we show that for all small values of the parameter (Formula presented.), the problem has at least two positive solutions and also we provide information about their regularity.

Dynamic Shakedown Sensitivity Analysis by Means of a Probabilistic Approach

The shakedown limit load multiplier problem for elastic plastic structures subjected to a combination of fixed and seismic loads is treated. In particular, reference is firstly made to the unrestricted dynamic shakedown theory. The relevant seismic load history is modeled as a repeated one and, with reference to classically damped structures, appropriate modal analyses are utilized. UTSW Small Animal Positron Emission Imager

A Small Animal Imager (SAI) for PET has been designed, built, tested in phantoms, and applied to investigations in mice and rats. The device uses principles based on gamma-ray induced scintillation in crossed fiber optic detectors connected to Position Sensitive Photomultiplier Tubes (PSPMT). Each detector consists of an epoxied stack of 28 layers of 135 round 1 mm BCF-10 scintillating plastic fibers. The overlap region forms a 13.5times13.5times2.8 cm3 detector volume.
