Optical calibration of a multispectral imaging system based on interference filters

2005

We present a new approach to optically calibrate a multispectral imaging system based on interference filters. Such a system typically suffers from some blurring of its channel images. Because the effectiveness of spectrum reconstruction depends heavily on the quality of the acquired channel images, and because this blurring negatively affects them, a method for deblurring and denoising them is required. The blur is modeled as a uniform intensity distribution within a circular disk. It allows us to characterize, quantitatively, the degradation for each channel image. In terms of global reduction of the blur, it consists of the choice of the best channel for the focus adjustment according to…

Optimal extension of multispectral image demosaicking algorithms for setting up a one-shot camera video acquisition system

2022

Multispectral images are acquired using multispectral cameras equipped with CCD or CMOS sensors which sample the visible or near infrared spectrum according to specific spectral bands. A mosaic of multispectral MSFA filters is superimposed on the surface of the sensors to acquire a raw image called an MSFA image. In the MSFA image, only one spectral band is available per pixel, the demosaicking process is necessary to estimate the multispectral image at full spatio-spectral resolution. Motivated by the success of single-sensor cameras capturing the image in a single exposure that use CFA filters, we performed a comparative study of a few recent color image demosaicking algorithms and experi…

Multispectral imaging and its use for face recognition : sensory data enhancement

2015

In this thesis, we focus on multispectral image for face recognition. With such application, the quality of the image is an important factor that affects the accuracy of therecognition. However, the sensory data are in general corrupted by noise. Thus, wepropose several denoising algorithms that are able to ensure a good tradeoff betweennoise removal and details preservation. Furthermore, characterizing regions and detailsof the face can improve recognition. We focus also in this thesis on multispectral imagesegmentation particularly clustering techniques and cluster analysis. The effectiveness ofthe proposed algorithms is illustrated by comparing them with state-of-the-art methodsusing both…

Towards noncontact skin melanoma selection by multispectral imaging analysis

2011

A clinical trial comprising 334 pigmented and vascular lesions has been performed in three Riga clinics by means of multispectral imaging analysis. The imaging system Nuance 2.4 (CRi) and self-developed software for mapping of the main skin chromophores were used. Spe- cific features were observed and analyzed for malignant skin melanomas: notably higher absorbance (especially as the difference of optical density relative to the healthy skin), uneven chromophore distribution over the lesion area, and the possibility to select the "melanoma areas" in the correla- tion graphs of chromophores. The obtained results indicate clinical potential of this technology for noncontact selec- tion of mel…

3D and multispectral imaging for subcutaneous veins detection.

2009

The first and perhaps most important phase of a surgical procedure is the insertion of an intravenous (IV) catheter. Currently, this is performed manually by trained personnel. In some visions of future operating rooms, however, this process is to be replaced by an automated system. Experiments to determine the best NIR wavelengths to optimize vein contrast for physiological differences such as skin tone and/or the presence of hair on the arm or wrist surface are presented. For illumination our system is composed of a mercury arc lamp coupled to a 10nm band-pass spectrometer. A structured lighting system is also coupled to our multispectral system in order to provide 3D information of the p…

Multispectral integral imaging acquisition and processing using a monochrome camera and a liquid crystal tunable filter

2012

This paper presents an acquisition system and a procedure to capture 3D scenes in different spectral bands. The acquisition system is formed by a monochrome camera, and a Liquid Crystal Tunable Filter (LCTF) that allows to acquire images at different spectral bands in the [480, 680]nm wavelength interval. The Synthetic Aperture Integral Imaging acquisition technique is used to obtain the elemental images for each wavelength. These elemental images are used to computationally obtain the reconstruction planes of the 3D scene at different depth planes. The 3D profile of the acquired scene is also obtained using a minimization of the variance of the contribution of the elemental images at each …

Contact and contactless diffuse reflectance spectroscopy: potential for recovery monitoring of vascular lesions after intense pulsed light treatment.

2011

Optical fiber contact probe diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and remote multispectral imaging methods in the spectral range of 400 to 1100 nm were used for skin vascular malformation assessment and recovery tracing after treatment by intense pulsed light. The results confirmed that oxy-hemoglobin relative changes and the optical density difference between lesion and healthy skin in the spectral region 500 to 600 nm may be successfully used for objective appraisal of the therapy effect. Color redness parameter a* = 2 is suggested as a diagnostic border to distinguish healthy skin and vascular lesions, and as the indicator of phototreatment efficiency. Valuable diagnostic information on large…

Analysis of acousto-optic tunable filter performance for imaging applications

2010

Acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTFs) can be used as spec- tral filters in multispectral imaging applications. Acousto-optic crystals diffract a single wavelength from a broadband light beam, depending on the applied radio frequency signal. However, experimental measurements show that the actual performance is far from the expected behavior. We present an experimental characterization of several commercial off-the- shelf AOTFs for the implementation of multispectral imaging instruments. The diffraction performance of three bare crystals is compared, while a fourth AOTF crystal is mounted on the optical path of a multispectral im- ager to evaluate its performance. The experiments show that t…

Discrete wavelet transform based multispectral filter array demosaicking

2013

International audience; The idea of colour filter array may be adapted to multi-spectral image acquisition by integrating more filter types into the array, and developing associated demosaicking algorithms. Several methods employing discrete wavelet transform (DWT) have been proposed for CFA demosaicking. In this work, we put forward an extended use of DWT for mul-tispectral filter array demosaicking. The extension seemed straightforward, however we observed striking results. This work contributes to better understanding of the issue by demonstrating that spectral correlation and spatial resolution of the images exerts a crucial influence on the performance of DWT based demosaicking.

NIR and Visible Image Fusion for Improving Face Recognition at Long Distance

2014

Face recognition performance achieves high accuracy in close proximity. However, great challenges still exist in recognizing human face at long distance. In fact, the rapidly increasing need for long range surveillance requires a passage from close-up distances to long distances which affects strongly the human face image quality and causes degradation in recognition accuracy. To address this problem, we propose in this paper, a multispectral pixel level fusion approach to improve the performance of automatic face recognition at long distance. The main objective of the proposed approach is to formulate a method to enhance the face image quality as well as the face recognition rate. First, v…
