The asymptotic covariance matrix of the Oja median

2003

The Oja median, based on a sample of multivariate data, is an affine equivariant estimate of the centre of the distribution. It reduces to the sample median in one dimension and has several nice robustness and efficiency properties. We develop different representations of its asymptotic variance and discuss ways to estimate this quantity. We consider symmetric multivariate models and also the more narrow elliptical models. A small simulation study is included to compare finite sample results to the asymptotic formulas.

School adjustment in children who stutter: The quality of the student-teacher relationship, peer relationships, and children's academic and behaviora…

2020

Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to investigate the quality of the student-teacher relationship, peer relationship, emotional and behavioral outcomes and academic performance in school adjustment of children who stutter. Methods The convenience sample consisted of 536 children – 62 affected by stuttering and 474 in the control group – and 36 prevalent teachers from six primary and secondary schools in Northwest Italy. Children were assessed with a sociometric questionnaire. Teacher evaluations were also used to assess their perception of their relationships with the student (Student-Teacher Relationship Scale), children’ behavior (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire), an…

Development of Planning in Relation to Age, Attention, Simultaneous and Successive Processing

1994

This study investigated the development of planning and its relationship with age and other cognitive processes taken from the PASS model. Ninety-nine students in grades two, four, and eleven were administered planning, simultaneous processing, successive processing, and attention tasks. MANOVA with grade level and gender as independent variables revealed that grade level had a significant effect on planning, whereas gender did not. All but one planning variable showed a significant main effect of grade in subsequent ANOVAs. Pair-wise comparisons between grade levels indicated that the developmental trajectories were not uniform in different tasks. Regression analyses indicated that the co…

The Role of Parental Communication and Emotional Intelligence in Child-to-Parent Violence

2019

In recent years, cases of child-to-parent violence (CPV) have increased significantly, prompting greater scientific interest in clarifying its causes. The aim of this research was to study the relationship between styles of family communication (open, offensive and avoidant), emotional intelligence or EI (attention, repair and perceived emotional clarity) and CPV, taking into account the gender of the aggressors. The participants of the study were 1200 adolescents (46.86% boys) between the ages of 12 and 18 enrolled at secondary schools in the Autonomous Communities of Andalusia and Valencia (M = 13.88, SD = 1.32). Bienestar Subjetivo de los Adolescentes: Un Estudio Comparativo entre Argentina y Brasil

2012

North/south differences among Italian emerging adults regarding criteria deemed important for adulthood and life satisfaction

2016

The main goal of this study was to compare Northern and Southern Italian emerging adult university students, regarding the importance attributed to criteria for adulthood and the levels of life and education satisfaction. Self-report questionnaires were filled by 475 Northern and Southern Italian University students (Age M = 22.91, 76% females, n = 359). Multivariate analysis of variance revealed that Southern emerging adults were more likely to place importance on family capacities, norm compliance, interdependence and role transitions as criteria for achieving adulthood than Northern emerging adults. Regarding gender differences, females were more likely to believe in the importance of no…

The Influence of an Enriched Sport Program on Children’s Sport Motivation in the School Context: The ESA PROGRAM

2020

Purpose: Besides the evident positive effect on body development, physical activity has proven to boost executive functions, especially if the exercises are enriched with cognitive stimuli. Previous studies have shown that introducing challenging exercises in the physical activity routine can also enhance motivation. Therefore, enriching a physical education program with cognitively challenging exercises may also foster children’s motivation during physical education classes, where the motivation is high at the beginning of the school year and low at the end of it. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to test if a sport program enriched by cognitive stimuli may improve kids’ motivation o…

Students’ physical activity intensity and sedentary behaviour by physical self-concept profiles: A latent profile analysis. [Intensidad de la activid…

2020

Abstract Aims of this study were to identify student clusters in physical appearance, sport competence, global physical self-concept and self-esteem, and to examine whether different physical self-concept groups differ in their moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behaviour. Participants of the study were 211 boys and 183 girls aged 13-16 years. MVPA and sedentary behaviour were monitored by GT3X accelerometers during seven days. Participants’ physical self-concept was measured by the short Physical Self-Description Questionnaire. Latent profile analyses revealed a four-cluster solution: 1) “low sport competence, moderate global physical self-concept and self-esteem, …

Parental and Infant Gender Factors in Parent-Infant Interaction: State-Space Dynamic Analysis.

2017

This study aimed to investigate the influence of parental gender on their interaction with their infants, considering, as well, the role of the infant’s gender. The State Space Grid (SSG) method, a graphical tool based on the non-linear dynamic system (NDS) approach was used to analyze the interaction, in Free-Play setting, of 52 infants, aged 6 to 10 months, divided into two groups: half of the infants interacted with their fathers and half with their mothers. There were 50% boys in each group. MANOVA results showed no differential parenting of boys and girls. Additionally, mothers and fathers showed no differences in the Diversity of behavioral dyadic states nor in Predictability. However…
