Applying a web-based training to foster self-regulated learning — Effects of an intervention for large numbers of participants

2016

Trainings on self-regulated learning (SRL) have been shown to be effective in improving both competence of self-regulated learning and objective measures of performance. However, human trainers can reach only a limited number of people at a time. Web-based trainings (WBT) could improve efficiency, as they can be distributed to potentially unlimited numbers of participants. We developed a WBT based on the process model of SRL by Schmitz and Wiese (2006) and tested it with 211 university students in a randomized control evaluation study including additional process analyses of learning diaries. Results showed that the training had significant effects on SRL knowledge, SRL behavior measured by…

The burden of previous fractures in hip fracture patients. The Break Study

2011

A positive history of fractures in older patients with hip fracture is common. We determined the risk factors associated with a positive history of fractures and the profile of care in hip fracture patients. In the Break Study, we enrolled 1249 women aged ≥60 years, seeking care for a hip fracture. Baseline information included age, body mass index, lifestyle (smoking habit, alcohol consumption), patient's history of fracture after the age of 50 years, family history of fragility fracture and health status (presence of comorbidity, use of specific drugs, pre-fracture walking ability, type of fracture, time to surgery, type of surgery, osteoporosis treatment). In the multivariable model age,…

Combining Pharmacokinetics and Vibrational Spectroscopy: MCR-ALS Hard-and-Soft Modelling of Drug Uptake In Vitro Using Tailored Kinetic Constraints

2022

Raman microspectroscopy is a label-free technique which is very suited for the investigation of pharmacokinetics of cellular uptake, mechanisms of interaction, and efficacies of drugs in vitro. However, the complexity of the spectra makes the identification of spectral patterns associated with the drug and subsequent cellular responses difficult. Indeed, multivariate methods that relate spectral features to the inoculation time do not normally take into account the kinetics involved, and important theoretical information which could assist in the elucidation of the relevant spectral signatures is excluded. Here, we propose the integration of kinetic equations in the modelling of drug uptake…

Multivariate nonparametric tests in a randomized complete block design

2003

AbstractIn this paper multivariate extensions of the Friedman and Page tests for the comparison of several treatments are introduced. Related unadjusted and adjusted treatment effect estimates for the multivariate response variable are also found and their properties discussed. The test statistics and estimates are analogous to the traditional univariate methods. In test constructions, the univariate ranks are replaced by multivariate spatial ranks (J. Nonparam. Statist. 5 (1995) 201). Asymptotic theory is developed to provide approximations for the limiting distributions of the test statistics and estimates. Limiting efficiencies of the tests and treatment effect estimates are found in the…

Multivariate analyses for the study of behavior: an integrated approach

2008

Simple quantitative evaluations of isolate behavioral elements (i.e. frequencies, durations, per cent distributions) are not representative of the whole behavioral structure [1]. As suggested in a landmark paper from Spruijt and Gispen [2], it is only through the evaluation of the inter-relations among behavioral elements that it is possible to explore behavior from very different points of view, greatly beyond what the human eye can intuitively interpret. In the present paper a brief outline of different multivariate techniques for behavioral analyses will be presented in the attempt to underline the feasibility of their integration.

Background of INCASI Project H2020-MSCA-RISE-2015 GA 691004.

Analysis of tear protein patterns by a neural network as a diagnostical tool for the detection of dry eyes

1999

The electrophoretic patterns of tears from patients with dry-eye disease (n = 43) and from healthy subjects (n = 17) were analyzed by means of multivariate statistical methods and an artificial neural network (ANN), following sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). From each electrophoretic pattern a data set was created, randomly divided into test (unknown samples) and training patterns (known samples), with ANN training by one of these sets. After training, the performance of the ANN was checked by presenting the test data set to the ANN. Furthermore, the data was classified using multivariate analysis of discriminance. The groups were significantly different…

Association between climate and new daily diagnoses of COVID-19

2020

AbstractBackgroundAlthough evidence is accumulating that climate conditions may positively or negatively influence the scale of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreaks, uncertainty remains concerning the real impact of climate factors on viral transmission. Methods. The number of new daily cases of COVID-19 diagnosed in Verona (Italy) was retrieved from the official website of Veneto Region, while information on daily weather parameters in the same area was downloaded from IlMeteo website, a renowned Italian technological company specialized in weather forecasts. The search period ranged between March 1 to November 11, 2020. The number of new daily COVID-19 cases and meteorological da…

Temporal variability analysis reveals biases in electronic health records due to hospital process reengineering interventions over seven years

2019

[EN] Objective To evaluate the effects of Process-Reengineering interventions on the Electronic Health Records (EHR) of a hospital over 7 years. Materials and methods Temporal Variability Assessment (TVA) based on probabilistic data quality assessment was applied to the historic monthly-batched admission data of Hospital La Fe Valencia, Spain from 2010 to 2016. Routine healthcare data with a complete EHR was expanded by processed variables such as the Charlson Comorbidity Index. Results Four Process-Reengineering interventions were detected by quantifiable effects on the EHR: (1) the hospital relocation in 2011 involved progressive reduction of admissions during the next four months, (2) th…
