Muon states in uniaxially strained iron

Effects of lattice relaxation, quantum motion, and uniaxial strain on the internal field at a positive-muon site in iron have been calculated. The uniaxial strain gives rise to a statistical shift of the muon population at interstitial sites. The effect of the population shift is found to be primarily responsible for the observed changes in the muon-precession frequency. The theory also predicts a 1T temperature dependence of the frequency shifts. Peer reviewed

Underground multi-muon experiment EMMA

EMMA is a new experiment designed for cosmic- ray composition studies around the knee energy operating at the shallow depth underground in the Pyh¨ asalmi mine, Fin- land. The array has sufficient coverage and resolution to de- termine the multiplicity, the lateral density distribution and the arrival direction of high-energy muons on an event by event basis. Preliminary results on the muon multiplicity ex- tracted using one detector station of the array are presented.

Calculation of total muon flux observed by Muon Monitor experiment

An approach to calculate the flux of cosmicgenic muons detected by Muon Monitor experiment in lab LAB2400 of the Underground Laboratory in Canfranc (LSC) is described. The measuring apparatus consists of three layers of SC16 scintillation matrix detectors. The hardware function of the detector assembly was determined using computer simulation. Obtained value of the total muon ux turned out to be equal to (4.35 ± 0.2) × 10−3 m −2 s −1.

Prospects for a DVCS measurement at COMPASS

The high energy polarised muon beam available at CERN with the option of using positive or negative muons with opposite polarisation gives COMPASS an excellent possibility to study generalised parton distributions via deeply virtual Compton scattering. In a first step we propose to use an unpolarised proton target to study the slope of the t dependence of the differential cross section as a function of xB j to observe a possible shrinkage of the nucleon with increasing xB j. Furthermore, the beam charge and spin difference will be measured over a wide kinematical range to determine the Compton form factor related to the GPD H. Double-βtransformations in isobaric triplets with mass numbersA=124, 130, and 136

The Q values of double-electron capture in ${}^{124}$Xe, ${}^{130}$Ba, and ${}^{136}$Ce and double-beta decay of ${}^{124}$Sn and ${}^{130}$Te have been determined with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP with a few hundred eV uncertainty. These nuclides are members of three isobaric triplets with common daughter nuclides. The main goal of this work was to investigate the existence of the resonant enhancement of the neutrinoless double-electron-capture rates in ${}^{124}$Xe and ${}^{130}$Ba in order to assess their suitability for the search for neutrinoless double-electron capture. Based on our results, in neither of these cases is the resonance condition fulfilled.

Measurement of the Ratio of theνμCharged-Current Single-Pion Production to Quasielastic Scattering with a 0.8 GeV Neutrino Beam on Mineral Oil

Charged current single pion production (CC{pi}{sup +}) and charged current quasi-elastic scattering (CCQE) are the most abundant interaction types for neutrinos at energies around 1 GeV, a region of great interest to oscillation experiments. The cross-sections for these processes, however, are not well understood in this energy range. This dissertation presents a measurement of the ratio of CC{pi}{sup +} to CCQE cross-sections for muon neutrinos on mineral oil (CH{sub 2}) in the MiniBooNE experiment. Abstract A comprehensive description of the muon storage ring and its operation is given, and the final results of the experiment are presented and discussed. The anomalous magnetic moments of positive and negative muons are found to be aμ+ = 1165911(11) × 10−9 and aμ− = 1165937(12) × 10−9 giving an average value for muons of aμ = 1165924(8.5) × 10−9. The electric dipole moments were also measured with the results Dμ+= (8.6 ± 4.5) × 10−9e · cm and Dμ− = (0.8 ± 4.3) × 10−19e · cm. Under the assumption of the CPT theorem these yield a weighted average of Dμ = (3.7 ± 3.4) × 10−19e · cm. Finally the time transformation of special relativity is shown to be valid to (0.8 ± 0.7) × 10−3 at γ ≅ 29.3…

Shell-model study of partial muon-capture rates in light nuclei

Abstract The nuclear shell model is used to study ordinary muon capture of light nuclei in the p, sd and p-sd shell-model spaces. Several well-established two-body interactions are applied to calculate the involved nuclear matrix elements and the emerging results are compared with each other. The resulting theoretical partial muon-capture rates are compared with experimental data and their stability against different model spaces and interactions studied. The effects of the induced-pseudoscalar strength, C p , on the capture rates is discussed. The relation between the allowed partial muon capture rates and the Gamow-Teller strength function is stressed.
