Data from: Intensity of male-male competition predicts morph diversity in a colour polymorphic lizard

2017

Sexual selection is one of the main processes involved in the emergence and maintenance of heritable colour polymorphisms in a variety of taxa. Here we test whether the intensity of sexual selection, estimated from population sex ratio, predicts morph diversity in Podarcis muralis, a colour polymorphic lizard with discrete white, yellow, orange, white-orange, and yellow-orange male and female phenotypes (i.e. morphs). In a sample of 116 Pyrenean populations and 5421 lizards, sex ratios (m/f) vary from 0.29 to 2.5, with the number of morphs for each sex ranging from 2 to 5. Male-biased sex ratios are associated with increased morph diversity as measured with Shannon's diversity index. The ma…

Data from: Colour patch size and measurement error using reflectance spectrometry

2018

1. Over the past twenty years, portable and relatively affordable spectrophotometers have greatly advanced the study of animal coloration. However, the small size of many colour patches poses methodological challenges that have not, to date, been assessed in the literature. Here, we tackle this issue for a reflectance spectrophotometry set-up widely used in ecology and evolution (the beam method). 2. We reviewed the literature on animal coloration reporting the use of reflectance spectrophotometry to explore how the minimum measurable size of a colour patch is determined. We then used coloured plastic sheets to create artificial colour patches, and quantify the relationship between colour p…

Developmental and tumoral vascularization is regulated by G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2

2012

Tumor vessel dysfunction is a pivotal event in cancer progression. Using an in vivo neovascularization model, we identified G protein–coupled receptor kinase 2 (GRK2) as a key angiogenesis regulator. An impaired angiogenic response involving immature vessels was observed in mice hemizygous for Grk2 or in animals with endothelium-specific Grk2 silencing. ECs isolated from these animals displayed intrinsic alterations in migration, TGF-β signaling, and formation of tubular networks. Remarkably, an altered pattern of vessel growth and maturation was detected in postnatal retinas from endothelium-specific Grk2 knockout animals. Mouse embryos with systemic or endothelium-selective Grk2 ablation …

Guinea pig Kupffer cells can be activated in vitro to an enhanced superoxide response

1988

Summary In the preceding paper it was shown that Kupffer cells isolated by digestion of the liver and purified by centrifugal elutriation can be activated in vitro by lipopolysaccharide and muramyl dipeptide to an enhanced superoxide response upon zymosan phagocytosis. Lipopolysaccharide and muramyl dipeptide also led to a strongly increased prostaglandin E 2 release during the phagocytosis of zymosan. This activation was accompanied by an increased production of prostaglandin E 2 during the incubation with the stimuli. Prostaglandin E 2 synthesis was inhibited by the cyclooxygenase inhibitor indomethacin, reduced by dexamethasone, but only slightly decreased by the lipoxygenase inhibitor n…

ICP- and IOP-Effects of Deliberate Hypotension Using Urapidil

1989

Deliberate hypotension is an accepted method to facilitate certain neurosurgical and intraocular procedures. The rationale is to reduce transmural pressure on arterial vessels and thus to facilitate preparation of cerebrovascular aneurysms and malfunctions — or in ophthalmology to reduce the risk of expulsive bleeding (Jantzen and Earnshaw 1988).

Endovascular Treatment of Spontaneous and Isolated Infrarenal Acute Aortic Syndrome with Unibody Aortic Stent-Grafts

2020

Abstract Introduction Spontaneous acute aortic syndrome (IAAS) is rarely localized in the infrarenal aorta. The endovascular approach is preferred over conventional open surgery with fewer complications. However, dedicated endovascular devices for IAAS treatment are unavailable. The aim was to report a large single-center experience using unibody stent-grafts to address IAAS. Methods From April 2016 to March 2019, a retrospective analysis of patients presenting spontaneous and isolated IAAS was performed. Patients addressed with the unibody stent-graft (AFX endovascular AAA system; Endologix Inc., Irvine, CA) were included in the study. Indications to IAAS treatment were persistent symptoms…

Acute aortic dissection

2011

An acute aortic syndrome with simultaneous presence of a penetrating aortic ulcer, an intramural haematoma, a thoracic aortic dissection and an abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture has not previously been reported. Herein, we describe our experience with a patient treated by endovascular means with an 8-year follow-up.

The effect of dietary phosphorus deficiency on the immune responses of European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.)

2003

Low phosphorous (P) feeds in aquaculture are recommended to reduce eutrophication of water systems. However, the feed should be adequate for normal growth and intact immune defence. Influence of low dietary P supply on non-specific and specific immune defence of European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) was studied in two trials. For Trial 1, a semi-purified, low-P diet was formulated and supplied with 0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, or 10.0 g P kg(-1)to obtain a P gradient of 4.4-14.9 g kg(-1)diet. Diets were fed to four replicate groups of fingerling whitefish for 42 days in a flow-through, freshwater system maintained at 15 degrees C. Fish fed with the P-unsupplemented diet had significantly lower plas…

Saint Agnes of Rome, the Pope and the “Purpuresque Pavo”: Memory Issues of the Apse Mosaic of Santa Agnese fuori le mura (625-638)

2018

The theme of memory is at the heart of apse mosaic of Santa Agnese fuori le mura. It’s a visual discourse about a roman martyr linked to the founder of new basilica and the “purpuresque pavo”. With the offering of this mosaics, the pope Honorius honours Saint Agnes’s memory. Honorius reaches to blend in a complex system of commemoration. Some close links are forged between the pope and the roman martyr. A true locus memoriae was established on the Via Nomentana since the middle of the IVth century. In the dedicatory inscription, the “purpuresque pavo” reminds the sacrifice of Christ, the martyrdom of Saint Agnes and the resurrection of the Elect. Thus, Honorius left an indelible mark in Rom…

Kieltenopetus vuosiluokilla 1–3: Miten oppilaat siihen suhtautuvat ja mitä tuloksia sillä saavutetaan puolen vuoden opiskelun aikana?

2019

As of January 2020, all Finnish pupils are to start their foreign language studies in the first grade. This study examined the effects of early language teaching by comparing pupils in grades 1, 2 and 3. The pupils had started studying English in August 2017 and had all had roughly the same number of English lessons by the time of the study in early 2018. The study examined pupils’ attitudes towards English and studying English as well as how pupils use English in their free time. Pupils also self-assessed their English skills and completed vocabulary and text segmentation tasks. The results show that the pupils had an overall positive attitude towards English and langu…
