Stability of pedalling mechanics during a prolonged cycling exercise performed at different cadences.

The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of pedalling rate on the pattern of mechanical torque application and on neuromuscular fatigue during prolonged cycling exercise. Eleven well-trained individuals performed three 1-h pedalling sessions, at 50 rev.min-1, 110 rev.min-1 and a freely chosen cadence, at an intensity corresponding to 65% of their maximal aerobic power. The mechanical torque applied on the right pedal was recorded for 30 s every 5 min while pedalling. Mechanisms underlying the inhibitory effects induced by pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide in mouse ileum

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the signal transduction mechanisms underlying the inhibitory effect induced by pituitary adenylate cyclase activating peptide (PACAP-27) on the spontaneous contractile activity of longitudinal muscle of mouse ileum. Mechanical activity of ileal segments was recorded isometrically in vitro. PACAP-27 produced apamin-sensitive reduction of the amplitude of the spontaneous contractions. 9-(Tetrahydro-2-furanyl)-9H-purin-6-amine (SQ 22,536), adenylate cyclase inhibitor, or genistein and tyrphostin 25, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, had negligible effects on PACAP-27-induced inhibition. Enantiomerically pure hexahydroquinolinones of the structural type 9 were prepared by a variation of the Hantzsch synthesis in which an optically active acetoacetate served as a chiral auxiliary reagent. Determinations of the de and ee values are described. The absolute configurations of the optically pure products were characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The antipodes 9a and 9b exhibited calcium antagonistic activities on smooth musculature; the (S)-(-)-enantiomer 9b was the more potent compound with regard to the EC50 values which differed by a factor of 100; the intrinsic activity of 9b was 1.2, compared with a value of 0.54 for 9a. Activation of skeletal muscle twice in quick succession results in nonlinear force summation (i.e., doublet potentiation). The force contributed by a second activation is typically of augmented amplitude, longer in duration, and generated at a greater rate. The purpose of this study was to examine force summation in a muscle attached to a compliant tendon, where considerable internal shortening occurs during a fixed-end contraction. Strength training in old age: adaptation of antagonist muscles at the ankle joint.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether strength training could reduce the deficit in plantarflexion (PF) maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) torque observed in previous studies in older subjects relative to young adults. Accordingly, the effects of a 6-month strength training program on the muscle and neural properties of the major muscle groups around the ankle were examined. Purpose This study aimed to compare the post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) induced by isometric and isotonic exercise on vertical jump performance. Methods 18 healthy trained men (25.8±2.7 years; 78.4±8.2 kg; 175.7±6.1 cm; 25.4±1.8 BMI; 126.72±10.8 kg squat 1-RM) volunteered for this study. Abstract Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) exerts pharmacological actions (e.g. anti-inflammatory, chemopreventive) which are relevant for potential clinical application in the digestive tract. However, no study has been published on its possible effects on intestinal motility, to date. The expression of NOS isoforms was studied in guinea pig skeletal muscle at the mRNA and protein level, and the effect of NO on contractile response was examined. Ribonuclease protection analyses demonstrated NOS I and NOS II mRNAs in diaphragm and gastrocnemius muscle. In Western blots, NOS I and NOS II immunoreactivities were found in the particulate but not the soluble fraction of skeletal muscle. NOS activity was found almost exclusively in the particulate fraction. About 50% of this activity was Ca2+ independent.
