Children’s physical activity and sedentary time compared using assessments of accelerometry counts and muscle activity level

Background This research compared accelerometry (ACC)-derived and muscle electromyography (EMG)-based estimates of physical activity (PA) and sedentary time in typical PA tasks and during the daily lives of children. Methods Data was included from two exploratory studies. In Study I, 6–7-year-old children (n = 11, 64% girls) were assessed for eight PA tasks (walking, stair negotiation, climbing, crawling, swinging, balancing, trampoline jumping and a game of tag). Myogenic effects enhance norepinephrine constriction: Inhibition by nitric oxide and felodipine. Myogenic, pressure-induced vasoconstriction may amplify the effects of circulating vasoconstrictors. Through intravital microscopy in cremaster arterioles (31 to 115 μm diameter), the relative contribution of myogenic responses (MR) to norepinephrine (NE)-induced constriction and the inhibitor potency of nitric oxide (NO) or a Ca2+ entry blocker (CEB), felodipine (F), were examined. Accommodation is controlled by the action of the ciliary muscle and mediated primarily by parasympathetic input through postganglionic fibers that originate from neurons in the ciliary and pterygopalatine ganglia. During accommodation the pupil constricts to increase the depth of focus of the eye and improve retinal image quality. Slowed abduction saccades in bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia

Horizontal eye movements were investigated in 65 patients with bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia utilizing direct current electro-oculography. Abduction saccades were slowed in 35 patients (53.8%), being hypermetric in 65.7% of them. Slowing of abduction saccades is attributed to impaired inhibition of the tonic resting activity of the antagonistic medial rectus muscle. Experimental data indicate that this slowing results from a lesion of an uncrossed connection between the pontine reticular formation and the oculomotor nucleus. Abduction saccades in unilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia

Horizontal eye movements were investigated in 60 consecutive patients with unilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia utilizing direct current electrooculography. In nine patients additional conjugated slowing of ipsiversive saccades indicated the diagnosis of a one-and-a-half syndrome. Slowing of abduction saccades was bilateral in two patients and unilateral in 20 (ipsilateral to the MLF lesion in 17 patients and contralateral in three). The electrofunctional investigations in the diagnosis of orbital diseases

The importance of electrofunctional examinations (electroretinography, electro-oculography and visual evoked potentials) in orbital diseases is emphasized. Although such tests cannot give the same support to the clinical diagnosis as ultrasonography or CT scanning, they do give information about the functional state of the various orbital components. Visual evoked potentials can monitor the functionality of the optic nerve during and after trauma or compressive orbital diseases; electroretinography shows retinal changes secondary to traumatic or vascular orbital diseases, while electro-oculography allows to record extraocular muscle dysfunction.
