OBJECTIVE: The incidence of recurrent mitral regurgitation (MR) after restrictive annuloplasty (RA) was 5% to 20% in several reports. There are many opinions in favor of adding subvalvular procedures to RA to reduce the tenting forces and improve the repair results. METHODS: From March 2003 to May 2010, 55 patients with severe ischemic MR who had undergone papillary muscle (PPM) relocation in conjunction with mitral annuloplasty in our institutions were enrolled. Effect of mountain ultramarathon distance competition on biochemical variables, respiratory and lower-limb fatigue

The study aimed at assessing the acute physiological effects of running a 65-km vs a 107- km mountain ultramarathon. Nineteen athletes (15 males and 4 females) from the shorter race and forty three athletes (26 males and 17 females) from the longer race were enrolled. Body weight, respiratory and lower limb strength were assessed before and after the race. Blood samples were obtained before, after and 24-h post-race. Body weight loss did not differ between races. Vitamin E deficiency and the susceptibility to lipid peroxidation of mouse cardiac and skeletal muscles

Effects of a short-term vitamin E deficiency on some lipid peroxidative properties were investigated in mouse cardiac and skeletal muscles. The concentration of vitamin E decreased 35.8% in 5 weeks and 61.2% in 12 weeks in skeletal muscle. The corresponding decrease in cardiac muscle was 65.7% in 12 weeks. Simultaneously the susceptibility of muscle homogenates to in vitro lipid peroxidation increased with 48.6% (5 weeks) and 44.5% (12 weeks) in skeletal muscle and with 101.8% (12 weeks) in cardiac muscle. Here, we experimentally addressed whether emotional homogeneity within a crowd might result from a cascade of local emotional transmissions where the perception of another's emotional expression produces, in the observer's face and body, sufficient information to allow for the transmission of the emotion to a third party. Characterization of a Ryanodine Receptor inPeriplaneta Americana

Specific binding sites for the alkaloid ryanodine were characterized in membrane preparations from sarcoplasmatic reticulum of Periplaneta americana skeletal muscle. Binding of [3H]ryanodine was optimal at pH 8 and at CaCl2 concentration of about 300 mumol l-1. The Ca-chelating agents EGTA (100 mumol l-1) and EDTA (100 mumol l-1) abolished 95% and 90% of the [3H]ryanodine binding respectively. Preincubation with Ca2+ (100 mumol l-1) restored the ryanodine binding in presence of up to 300 mumol l-1 EGTA. Abstract Trehalose is the main haemolymph sugar in many insect species. To be utilized trehalose must be hydrolysed into its glucose units by trehalase (EC 3.2.1.28). Inhibitors of trehalase have attracted interest as possible pesticides and tools for studying the regulation of trehalose metabolism in insects. To make full use of these inhibitors requires knowledge of their fate and effects in vivo. To this end we have measured trehazolin in locusts using a method based on the specific inhibition of a trehalase preparation.
