Safety of etanercept therapy in rheumatoid patients undergoing surgery: preliminary report

This is a preliminary report on a case-series of rheumatoid patients that underwent various kinds of elective surgery but did not withdraw etanercept therapy in spite of physician advise. Elective surgery consisted of right knee surgical prosthesis, bilateral cataract, bilateral hallux valgus, right hip prosthesis, bladder stone by cystoscopy and left inguinal hernia. All the patients had a regular healing rate. During follow-up (6-12 months) no one of these patients were suffering from infective complications after surgery. T2-mapping of the sacroiliac joints at 1.5 Tesla: a feasibility and reproducibility study

Objective: To evaluate the reproducibility of T2 relaxation time measurements of the sacroiliac joints at 1.5 T. Materials and methods: Healthy volunteers underwent an oblique axial multislice multiecho spin-echo sequence of the sacroiliac joints at 1.5 T. Regions of interest were manually drawn using a dedicated software by two musculoskeletal radiologists to include the cartilaginous part of the sacroiliac joints. Abstract Although below-knee compression elastic stockings (CES) are effective for the prevention of the postthrombotic syndrome (PTS), a substantial number of patients with deep venous thrombosis still develop PTS. In the present open-label, randomized clinical trial, we compared thigh-length with below-knee CES for the prevention of PTS. A total of 267 patients with the first episode of proximal deep venous thrombosis were randomized to wear either thigh-length or below-knee CES for 2 years. Purpose. To assess mid- to long-term outcomes of cementless primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) in younger patients. Methods. Records of 28 women and 34 men (75 hips) aged 18 to 55 (mean, 38) years who underwent primary THA using a hydroxyapatite-coated stem and a threaded cup and had been followed up for a mean of 10 (6–15) years were reviewed. 13 of the patients had bilateral THAs. Clinical and radiographic outcomes were evaluated. Results. After a minimum follow-up of 7 (range, 7–14) years, 12 (16%) of the hips were revised, of which 8 (11%) were for the cup. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of different bike positions on the perception of fatigue, pain and comfort. Twenty cyclists underwent three tests that involved cycling for 45 min at their individual 50% peak aerobic power output while adopting different positions on the bike. Participants performed the cycling tests adopting three positions defined by two parameters (knee flexion angle [20°, 30°, 40°] and trunk flexion angle [35°, 45°, 55°]) in random order. However, despite decades of shoe technology developments and the fact that shoes have become increasingly cushioned, aimed to ease the impact on runners’ legs, running injuries have not decreased. To better understand the shoe cushioning paradox, we examined impact loading and the spring-like mechanics of running in a conventional control running shoe and a highly cushioned maximalist shoe at two training speeds, 10 and 14.5 km/h. Summary What is known and objective Safety of the anti-inflammatory drug flurbiprofen is comparable with that of other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs of the propionic acid class, which are commonly associated with gastrointestinal and renal side effects. Here we report a case of a fatal hypersensitivity reaction to an oral spray of flurbiprofen taken for sore throat.
