The Black Block : Opaque Page as a Graphic Device
2019
The black block, a rectangle of black printing ink on the page of a book, surrounded by blank margins, is a peculiar graphic device. Its literary tradition has usually been considered to start from Tristram Shandy, which includes a renowned black page in memory of “poor Yorick”. Nevertheless, Sterne’s gimmick can be seen as an allusion to an older typographical tradition of the so-called mourning pages, which were featured in books remembering the departed decades before Tristram Shandy. In this article, we analyze the ways in which the black block is used in narrative literature, with examples chosen mainly from 20th century experimental fiction. The block proves ambivalent in that it seem…
Quality management of research, development and innovation activities in Finnish universities of applied sciences
2018
This study utilises the quality audit reports of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences to describe the quality management of their research, development and innovation activities (RDI). The institutions are trying to find ways of enlarging the volume of RDI activities and this is clearly reflected in the ways in which they manage quality. Much of the focus lies on the project proposal preparation phase and strategic direction of resources, while less attention has been paid to monitoring and developing the quality of the output. These emphases are analysed in relation to Harvey & Green’s seminal notions on quality in an attempt to see how useful this theoretical framework is in explainin…
Enzyme-assisted extraction of anthocyanins and other phenolic compounds from blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum L.) press cake: From processing to bioactivit…
2022
The effects of commercial enzymes (pectinases, cellulases, beta-1-3-glucanases, and pectin lyases) on the recovery of anthocyanins and polyphenols from blackcurrant press cake were studied considering two solid:solvent ratios (1:10 and 1:4 w/v). β-glucanase enabled the recovery of the highest total phenolic content – 1142 mg/100 g, and the extraction of anthocyanins was similar using all enzymes (∼400 mg/100 g). The use of cellulases and pectinases enhanced the extraction of antioxidants (DPPH − 1080 mg/100 g; CUPRAC – 3697 mg/100 g). The freeze-dried extracts presented antioxidant potential (CUPRAC, DPPH), which was associated with their biological effects in different systems: antiviral a…
Kuuleeko eduskunta tieteentekijöitä?
2023
Viimeisen neljännesvuosisadan aikana eduskunnan valiokunnat kuulivat yli 10 000 kertaa tieteentekijöitä asiantuntijoina. Tutkijoiden osuus kaikista valiokuntien kuulemista henkilöstä on kuitenkin alle kymmenen prosenttia.
Suomalainen ekonomistikone
2022
Ekonomistikone on verkossa toimiva ekonomistien asiantuntijapaneeli. Tässä artikkelissa käymme läpi suomalaisen ekonomistikoneen viisivuotista taivalta. Vastaamme seuraaviin kysymyksiin: Miksi ekonomistikone perustettiin? Ketkä olivat tässä aloitteellisia? Miten ekonomistikone toimii? Miten kysymykset laaditaan ja ketkä niihin vastaavat? Mistä ekonomistit ovat samaa mieltä, mistä eri mieltä? Mihin ekonomistit eivät osaa vastata? Millaista näkyvyyttä ekonomistikone saa julkisuudessa? Lopuksi pohdimme hieman ekonomistikoneen tulevaisuutta. nonPeerReviewed
Hypotheses engineering : first essential steps of experiment-driven software development
2019
Recent studies have proposed the use of experiments to guide software development in order to build features that the user really wants. Some authors argue that this approach represents a new way to develop software that is different from the traditional requirement-driven one. In this position paper, we propose the discipline of Hypotheses Engineering in comparison to Requirements Engineering, highlighting the importance of proper handling hypotheses that guide experiments. We derive a set of practices within this discipline and present how the literature has tackled them up to now. Finally, we propose a set of research questions that could guide future work towards helping practitioners. …
