Maahanmuuttodiskurssit eduskuntapuolueiden vuoden 2015 vaalimateriaaleissa
2016
Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää, miten maahanmuuttoa käsitellään kevään 2015 eduskuntavaalimateriaaleissa.
Tutkimuksen kohderyhmän muodostivat suomalaisten toimintaterapiaorganisaatioiden työntekijät, joilla on lähiesimies. T…
Social support in the workplace for physicians in specialization training
2018
ABSTRACT When becoming a specialist, learning-through-service plays a significant role. The workplace affords good opportunities for learning, but the service-learning period may also impose stress on phycisians in specialization training. In medical work, social support has proved to be a very important factor in managing stress. Social support may afford advantages also for learning and professional identity building. However, little was known about how social support is perceived by doctors in specialization training. This study aimed to understand the perceptions of physicians in specialization training regarding social support communication in their workplace during their learning-thro…
Memorializing mass deaths at the border: two cases from Canberra (Australia) and Lampedusa (Italy)
2017
In this paper, we compare two seemingly very similar instances in which individuals and organizations within the borders of the global North have memorialized the deaths of irregular migrants at sea: the SIEV X memorial in Australia’s national capital Canberra, and the Giardino della memoria (Garden of Remembrance) on the Italian island of Lampedusa. Unlike ephemeral manifestations of grief, potentially these memorials have effects that reach well beyond their creation. We relate the differences between the memorials to the contexts within which they were created: an immediate local response involving people directly affected by the disaster’s aftermath, on the one hand, and a delayed natio…
Witnessing the experience of European bordering: Watching the documentaryUnder den samme himmelin an immigration detention centre
2017
This article draws on theories of bordering and mediated witnessing to examine a documentary film that mediates migrants’ experiences of bordering in Europe. My analysis of Under den samme himmel/Days of Hope shows how the film captures the multiplicity of bordering practices, from geographical to socio-cultural borderings. The analysis is informed by watching and discussing the film in an immigrant detention facility in Finland with people who experienced and eye-witnessed experiences similar to those depicted in the film. This creates a sense of co-presence of the experiential landscapes in the border zones, and the film invites viewers to consider borders not as lines in the landscape, b…
Global, National, or Market? Emerging REDD+ Governance Practices in Mozambique and Tanzania
2016
This article examines emerging governance practices in the REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) initiative. We examine three different general governance practices (neoliberal, post-national, and government-led practices) that have been applied in the interaction between international organizations and two REDD target countries: Mozambique and Tanzania. In these countries, we find that emerging REDD+ governance practices are a mixture of international organizations’ procedural practices and the target country’s established governance practices, whereas neoliberal practices are weakly expressed. These findings call into question the simplified assumption of re…
Of Walls and Fences: Brexit and the History of Cross-Border Migration
2019
Champions of Brexit have employed a large arsenal of arguments to boost their case for a Britain better off on its own, freed from its current European entanglements. All kinds of supposed ills have been linked to the country’s EU membership in British public debates over the years, ranging from petty bureaucratic absurdities, such as directives regarding crooked bananas, to heavy-handed rulings on higher matters of domestic and foreign policy. Lamentations about continental meddling have been accompanied by grand, nostalgic visions of an unfettered future Great Britain, ready to return to its proper, independent role on the global stage once it manages to cast off the shackles imposed by B…
Visibility without voice: Media witnessing irregular migrants in BBC online news journalism
2016
In the analysis of journalistic representation of irregular migration to Europe, rather little attention is given to the variation of modes and genres of journalism. Most studies focus on text in ‘old media’ and the news genre. This article analyses affordances of different modalities and genres of online journalism in framing irregular migrants. Media framing in BBC online news coverage of a mediatised conflict in Spain, defined as a ‘migration crisis’, is analysed with multimodal social semiotics. While mediation makes global audiences witness tragedies at Europe's borders and online journalism affords more voice and deliberation for migrant sources, the frames of threat and victim domina…
”Toinen koti” rajojen ylittäjänä
2017
Kansallisteatterin Kiertuenäyttämö käynnisti keväällä 2016 projektin, jossa kysytään, mikä on koti ja mitä on kotoutuminen. Toinen koti -projektissa kohtaavat pakolaistaustaiset ja “kantalaiset”, Suomessa syntyneet taiteilijat. Esityksen ensi-ilta on 16. marraskuuta 2017 Kansallisteatterin Omapohja-näyttämöllä. nonPeerReviewed
