FUNCTIONAL GENOMIC APPROACHES TO ELUCIDATE BIOTIC AND ABIOTIC STRESS RESPONSES IN PLANTS
Serological and molecular identification of Legionella spp. isolated from water and surrounding air samples in Italian healthcare facilities
2016
Abstract Background Legionella is an intracellular microorganism living in natural and artificial aquatic environments. Although its transmission to humans is linked to the inhalation of contaminated aerosols, there is no validated air sampling method for the control and prevention of the disease. The aim of the present study was to provide more information on the distribution of Legionella spp. in indoor environments and to determine whether the same Legionella strains are isolated from air and water samples. Methods Ten healthcare facilities located in seven regions of Italy were enrolled. The serological typing of Legionella spp. from water samples and the surrounding air by active and p…
Isolation and characterization of microsatellite markers in the liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica)
2004
PRIMER NOTE; International audience; Six microsatellite markers were isolated from Fasciola hepatica, a re-emerging parasite that causes important veterinary and public health problems. In a sample of 52 liver flukes from a region of hyperendemicity (Bolivian Altiplano), five microsatellite were polymorphic. Our results showed that liver flukes present important genetic variability, suggesting a preferential outcrossing reproduction mode for this hermaphroditic parasite.
Detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex in cattle by PCR on milk, lymphnode and nasal swabs.
1998
The PCR technique was applied to the diagnosis of tuberculosis in live cattle, and both skin-test-negative and skin-test-positive animals were studied. DNA was taken from various sources including specimens of lymph node aspirates, milk, and nasal swabs. After slaughter and visual inspection, tissues such as lymph nodes, lungs, and udders from tuberculin reactors were tested by the same technique. Specific oligonucleotide primers internal to the IS6110 insertion element were used to amplify a 580-bp fragment. A 182-bp fragment was obtained by designating a nested PCR from the first amplification product. This fragment was cloned and sequenced, and after being labeled it was employed in dot …
Standardisation of methods for assessing mould germination: a workshop report.
2006
International audience; The first workshop on predictive mycology was held in Marseille, France, 2–4 February 2005 under the auspices of the French Microbiological Society. The purpose of the workshop was to list the different techniques and definitions used by scientists for assessing mould germination and to evaluate the influence of the different techniques on the experimental results. Recommendations were made when a large consensus was obtained. In order to facilitate the study of germination, alternative methods to microscopic examination were examined.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis multirezistences noteikšana
2018
Latvijā un pasaulē joprojām mirst no ārstējamas slimības – tuberkuloze ir devītais nāves cēlonis pasaulē. Nozīmīga sabiedrības veselības problēma ir M. tuberculosis multirezistence pret antibakteriālajiem līdzekļiem. Rezistence pret antibakteriālajiem līdzekļiem galvenokārt saistīta ar to, ka daļa tuberkulozes slimnieku netiek savlaicīgi atklāti, tādējādi turpinot slimības aktīvu transmisiju sabiedrībā; antibakteriālo līdzekļu nepareizu pielietošanu – priekšlaicīgi pārtrauc terapiju vai lieto zāles neregulāri, kā rezultātā rodas multirezistentās tuberkulozes formas. Darba mērķis: Noteikt no klīniskā materiāla izdalīto M. tuberculosis celmu sastopamības biežumu un to rezistenci pret antibakt…
Ferdinanda Erdmaņa Štolla sēņu mulāža
2020
Latvijas Universitātes Muzeja Botānikas un mikoloģijas kolekcijās glabājas unikāls eksponāts – sēņu mulāža, kas piederējusi Baltijas dabaspētniekam F. E. Štollam (1874 – 1966) un tikusi izmantota izglītības procesā. Iespējams, ka tā ir vienīgā Latvijā saglabājusies vēsturiskā sēņu mulāža.
Identification of the Yersinia enterocolitica urease beta subunit as a target antigen for human synovial T lymphocytes in reactive arthritis.
1993
The local T-cell response to bacterial antigens is involved in the pathogenesis of reactive arthritis (ReA). Here, we have identified a 19-kDa antigen of Yersinia enterocolitica O:9 recognized by Yersinia-specific synovial fluid CD4+ T cells in two patients with Yersinia-induced ReA. N-terminal amino acid sequencing of this protein revealed that it was identical to the 19-kDa urease beta subunit of Y. enterocolitica O:9. This protein has previously been shown to be arthritogenic in preimmunized rats after intra-articular injection. Analysis of the T-cell response to this protein showed that it contains several T-cell epitopes, one of which cross-reacts with other enterobacteria not able to …
Enhanced prolylhydroxylase activity in the posterior annulus fibrosus of canine intervertebral discs following long-term running exercise
2010
The effect of long-term excercise on the intervertebral disc collagen concentration (hydroxyproline), collagen-synthesizing enzymes (prolyl-4-hydroxylase, PH, and galactosyl-hydroxylysyl glucosyltransferase, GGT) and hydroxypyridinium crosslinks was studied in ten female beagle dogs. The dogs were run on a treadmill for 1 year starting at the age of 15 weeks. The daily running distance was gradually increased to 40km, which distance the dogs ran for the final 15 weeks. Ten untrained dogs from the same breeding colony served as controls. The nucleus pulposus and anterior and posterior halves of the annulus fibrosus of C2-3, T10-12, L4-5 disc segments were analysed. Crosslinks were measured f…
Molecular and Macromolecular Changes in Bottle-Aged White Wines Reflect Oxidative Evolution–Impact of Must Clarification and Bottle Closure
2018
This article is part of the Research Topic "The Chemistry of Wine Ageing" Adresse de correspondance: Institut Universitaire de la Vigne et du Vin, Dijon, France PMCID: PMC5897750; International audience; Chardonnay wines from Burgundy, obtained from musts with three levels of clarification (Low, Medium and High) during two consecutive vintages (2009 and 2010) and for two kinds of closures (screw caps and synthetic coextruded closures) were analyzed chemically and sensorially. Three bottles per turbidity level were opened in 2015 in order to assess the intensity of the reductive and/or oxidative aromas (REDOX sensory scores) by a trained sensory panel. The chemical analyses consisted in poly…
