Eighty Listeria monocytogenes isolates were obtained from Chinese retail ready-to-eat (RTE) food and were previously characterized with serotyping and antibiotic susceptibility tests. The aim of this study was to characterize the subtype and virulence potential of these L. monocytogenes isolates by multilocus sequence typing (MLST), virulence-associate genes, epidemic clones (ECs), and sequence analysis of the important virulence factor: internalin A (inlA). ABSTRACT To investigate if the primary function of the Agr system of Listeria monocytogenes is to monitor cell density, we followed Agr expression in batch cultures, in which the autoinducer concentration was uniform, and in biofilms. Expression was heterogeneous, suggesting that the primary function of Agr is not to monitor population density.

We report about a one year old girl with toxic shock syndrome (TSS), which was confirmed by a significant rise of TSST-1 titers. In addition to known manifestations of TSS, to our knowledge this is the first report about development of polyserositis in this disease. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) was elevated at initial evaluation and fell under treatment with cortisone. This finding is in contrast to in-vitro observations. We believe that the use of cortisone in TSS warrants further investigation.

It has been postulated that fungal organisms might represent the immunologic target initiating and maintaining the disease process in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis as a common denominator. A female patient presented as an emergency case with pyonephrosis and septicemia as a result of ureterosciatic hernia. Septicemia was treated successfully by immediate percutaneous nephrostomy tubing. After complete disappearance of symptoms, the hernia was closed operatively. Topographic anatomy of ureterosciatic hernia is presented.
