Thin film preparation of the low charge carrier density Kondo system CeSb
1999
Abstract We report the thin film preparation of CeSb by means of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) onto sapphire (1 1 −2 0) substrates. Above a substrate temperature of about 300°C CeSb crystallizes in (0 0 1) orientation. The growth mode of the films changes from a fiber textured to an epitaxial mode for deposition temperatures above 900°C. Although the specific resistivity is enhanced the characteristic energy scales, like the Kondo temperature TK and the magnetic ordering temperature TN, are not changed significantly.
Low Temperature Optical Absorption by Magnons in KNiF3 and NiO Single-Crystals
2000
Optical absorption spectra of KNiF3 and NiO stoichiometric single-crystals were measured at 5 K in the range from 4000 to 50000 cm-1. The observed bands are interpreted based on the energy levels diagram for Ni2+ (3d 8 ) ion in a cubic crystal field. The crystal-field parameter Dq is equal to 766 cm-1 in KNiF3 and 890 cm-1 in NiO. Particular attention is paid to the band due to the magnetic-dipole 3A2g(F)→3T2g(F) transition, located at 7700 cm-1 in KNiF3 and at 8900 cm-1 in NiO. We show that the energy difference between the two peaks, located at the low energy side of the band, is related to the zone-center (k=0) one-magnon energy, so that the low-energy peak is attributed to the pure exci…
Magnetic resonance study of bulk and thin film EuTiO3
2017
Magnetic resonance spectra of EuTiO3 in both bulk and thin film form were taken at temperatures from 3-350 K and microwave frequencies from 9.2-9.8 and 34 GHz. In the paramagnetic phase, magnetic resonance spectra are determined by magnetic dipole and exchange interactions between Eu2+ spins. In the film, a large contribution arises from the demagnetization field. From detailed analysis of the linewidth and its temperature dependence, the parameters of spin-spin interactions were determined: the exchange frequency is 15-15.5 GHz and the estimated critical exponent of the spin correlation length is ~ 0.5. In the bulk samples, the spectra exhibited a distinct minimum in the linewidth at the N…

AbstractMaterials that demonstrate long-range magnetic order are synonymous with information storage and the electronics industry, with the phenomenon commonly associated with metals, metal alloys or metal oxides and sulfides. A lesser known family of magnetically ordered complexes are the monometallic compounds of highly anisotropic d-block transition metals; the ‘transformation’ from isolated zero-dimensional molecule to ordered, spin-canted, three-dimensional lattice being the result of through-space interactions arising from the combination of large magnetic anisotropy and spin-delocalization from metal to ligand which induces important intermolecular contacts. Here we report the effect…
High pressure in-situ X-ray diffraction study on Zn-doped magnetite nanoparticles
2018
We have performed high pressure synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction experiments on two different samples of Zn-doped magnetite nanoparticles (formula Fe(3-x)ZnxO4; x = 0.2, 0.5). The structural behavior of then a noparticles was studied up to 13.5 GPa for x = 0.2, and up to 17.4 GPa for x = 0.5. We have found that both systems remain in the cubic spinel structure as expected for this range of applied pressures. The analysis of the unit cell volume vs. pressure results in bulk modulus values lower than in both end-members, magnetite (Fe3O4) and zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4), suggesting that chemical disorder may favor compressibility, which is expected to improve the increase of the Neel temperatu…
Cyano-Bridged Bimetallic Assemblies from Hexacyanometalate, [M(CN)6]3- (M = MnIII and FeIII), and [M(N4-macrocycle)]2+ (M = FeIII, NiII and ZnII) Bui…
2001
Reactions between [M(N4-macrocycle)]2+ (M = ZnII and NiII; macrocycle ligands are either CTH = d,l-5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane or cyclam = 1,4, 8, 11-tetrazaazaciclotetradecane) and [M(CN)6]3- (M = FeIII and MnIII) give rise to cyano-bridged assemblies with 1D linear chain and 2D honeycomblike structures. The magnetic measurements on the 1D linear chain complex [Fe(cyclam)][Fe(CN)6]·6H2O 1 points out its metamagnetic behavior, where the ferromagnetic interaction operates within the chain and the antiferromagnetic one between chains. The Neel temperature, TN, is 5.5 K and the critical field at 2 K is 1 T. The unexpected ferromagnetic intrachain interaction can…
Polarized neutron diffraction and Mössbauer spectral study of short-range magnetic correlations in the ferrimagnetic layered compounds(PPh4)[FeIIFeII…
2002
Short-range antiferromagnetic correlations have been studied in the layered compounds (PPh 4 ) [Fe I I Fe I I I (ox) 3 ] and (NBu 4 ) [Fe I I Fe I I I (ox) 3 ] by neutron polarization analysis and Mossbauer spectroscopy. Polarized neutron diffraction profiles obtained between 2 and 50 K on (d 2 0 -PPh 4 ) [Fe I I Fe I I I (ox) 3 ] show no magnetic Bragg scattering; the lack of such scattering indicates the absence of long-range magnetic order. However, a broad asymmetric feature observed at a Q of ca. 0.8 A - 1 is attributed to two-dimensional short-range magnetic correlations, which are described by a Warren function. The correlation length is ca. 50 A between 2 and 30 K and then decreases…
Dielectric properties and ac conductivities of Bi1−xSmxFeO3 ceramics
2019
Dielectric permittivity, dielectric losses and ac-conductivity of polycrystalline Bi1−xSmxFeO3 (x = 0; 0.05; 0.1; 0.15; 0.2) are measured in the frequency range 1 kHz–10 MHz and in the temperature range 25–600 °C. Anomalies have been observed at the 200 °C, 300 °C and at the Néel temperature. It has been demonstrated that doping with Sm has enhanced the dielectric properties and increased conduction in the frequency region 1 MHz) and at a certain temperature Tm, depending on the composition Bi1−xSmxFeO3, the conductivity reaches a maximum. The results are discussed with reference to the model of correlated barrier hopping.
Magnetic order in the heavy fermion system Ce(Cu1−xNix)2Ge2
1990
Abstract The magnetic phase diagram of the heavy fermion (HF) systems Ce(Cu 1−x Ni x ) 2 Ge 2 is discussed utilizing results of transport, thermodynamic and neutron-scattering measurements. While the Kondo temperature increases monotonically with x, a complex x-dependence is found for the Neel temperature, associated with a transition from local-moment to itinerant HF magnetism.
Microwave electrodynamics of the antiferromagnetic superconductor GdBa2Cu3O7−δ
1999
The temperature dependence of the microwave surface impedance and conductivity are used to study the pairing symmetry and properties of cuprate superconductors. However, the superconducting properties can be hidden by the effects of paramagnetism and antiferromagnetic long-range order in the cuprates. To address this issue we have investigated the microwave electrodynamics of GdBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}, a rare-earth cuprate superconductor which shows long-range ordered antiferromagnetism below T_N=2.2 K, the Neel temperature of the Gd ion subsystem. We measured the temperature dependence of the surface resistance and surface reactance of c-axis oriented epitaxial thin films at 10.4, 14.7 and 17…
