Bitterness and astringency of flavan-3-ol monomers, dimers and trimers

Intensity of astringency and bitterness of seven flavonoid compounds was evaluated by a time-intensity (TI) procedure. Eighteen trained judges rated intensity continuously from ingestion, through expectoration at 10 s until extinction of the sensation. The seven stimuli included two flavan-3-ol monomers, (+)-catechin and (−)-epicatechin, three dimers and two trimers synthesised from catechin or epicatechin by condensation with (+)-dihydroquercitin. Expression of neurotrophins, GDNF, and their receptors in rat thyroid tissue

Levels of mRNA for neurotrophins (brain-derived neurotrophic factor, BDNF; neurotrophin 3, NT-3; neurotrophin 4, NT-4) and their receptors (trkA, trkB, trkC) and for glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and its receptors (ret, GDNFR-alpha) were measured in rat thyroid tissue by ribonuclease protection assays. In thyroid tissue the NT-3 mRNA level was threefold lower and the NT-4 mRNA level sixfold higher than those detected in adult rat hippocampus, while BDNF mRNA was undetectable. Introduction: atherosclerosis is one of the leading causes of death and morbidity worldwide. It consists in the development of plaques in the intima media layers of arteries due to lipid accumulation and oxidation, causing massive inflammation. Regulation by oestrogens of tachykinin NK3 receptor expression in the rat uterus.

The expression of the tachykinin NK3 receptor and its regulation by ovarian steroids were analyzed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in uteri from ovariectomized rats. A single transcript corresponding to the 325-bp product expected for the tachykinin NK3 receptor was detected in uteri from olive oil-treated (control) ovariectomized rats. The level of tachykinin NK3 receptor mRNA in progesterone-treated animals was similar to that observed in uteri from control ones. Tachykinin NK3 receptor mRNA levels were significantly smaller in uteri from oestrogen-treated ovariectomized rats, with approximately a 32-fold decrease. Growth factors and cell kinetics: a mathematical model applied to Il-3 deprivation on leukemic cell lines.

We assume the existence of a specific G1 protein which is an initiator of DNA replication. This initiator is supposed to be synthesized according to Michaelis-Menten kinetics. In order to start DNA replication, it is assumed that this G1 specific protein must be produced in a required amount. Intra-cellular growth inhibitors and extra-cellular growth factors control the production of the initiator. This model allows to calculate the average G1 phase time as a function of the various chemical concentrations of nutrients, enzymes, growth inhibitors and growth factors. Immune-mediated rippling muscle disease with myasthenia gravis: a report of seven patients with long-term follow-up in two.

We report seven patients with immune-mediated rippling muscle disease (iRMD) and AChR-antibody positive myasthenia gravis (MG) without germline caveolin-3 gene mutations. We describe the follow-up of two patients and the clinical features of five new patients (1 female, 4 male, aged 32 to 69 years). These presented with significant generalized, exercise-induced and electrically-silent muscle rippling with myalgia, combined with generalized MG. In two of the seven patients, MG appeared before iRMD. Mediastinal imaging excluded thymic alterations in all, although two had other coincident tumours.
