The current study used event-related brain potentials (ERPs) and behavioral measures to examine effects of genre awareness on sentence processing and evaluation. We hypothesized that genre awareness modulates effects of genre-typical manipulations. We manipulated instructions between participants, either specifying a genre (poetry) or not (neutral). Sentences contained genre-typical variations of semantic congruency (congruent/incongruent) and morpho-phonological features (archaic/contemporary inflections). Offline ratings of meaningfulness (n=64/group) showed higher average ratings for semantically incongruent sentences in the poetry vs. neutral condition. ERPs during sentence reading (n=2…

The Influence of Hierarchical Masks on Masked Repetition Priming: Evidence From Event-Related Potential Investigation
2019
The discussion about relationship between prime and target has contributed to the mechanism of priming effect and object recognition. Nevertheless, the role of relationship between mask and target in those cognitive processes remains unquestioned. In the present study, we aim to investigate how mask-target hierarchical relationship may affect word priming and familiarity, by using the masked repetition paradigm and manipulating three hierarchical relationship between mask and target. It is hypothesized that a closer hierarchical relationship between mask and target is associated with a higher mask target similarity, and thereby it leads to a worse recognition performance. Our behavioral res…
Event-related brain potentials of masked repetition and semantic priming while listening to sentences.
2012
We combined for the first time electrophysiological measures and masked priming technique in sentential context, by setting up a cross-modal masked priming paradigm involving the auditory presentation of sentences. ERPs were time-locked to an auditorily presented word that was preceded by a repeated, related or unrelated pattern masked prime. We registered a two-way N400-difference between unrelated and related/repeated primes, followed by a late positive component (LPC) for repetition priming. Related primes appear to facilitate the lexical-semantic processing of the target to the same extent repeated primes do (equally attenuated N400). Repetition priming exerts additional demands (LPC), …
Prosodic Phrasing and Transitivity in Head-Final Sentence Comprehension – ERP Evidence from German Ambiguous DPs
2010
In this article, we present an ERP study investigating the neurophysiological correlates of the interplay between prosodic phrasing and case information in head-final sentence processing. We examine German DP1-DP2-V constructions, in which the second DP can either be interpreted as a possessive modifier of the first DP (one-participant reading), or as a verbal argument (two-participant reading). An N400 on the determiner of the second DP is observed when either case information or prosodic phrasing biased toward the establishment of a two-participant reading, thus reflecting local processing costs associated with the introduction of a transitive event. By contrast, when the DPs are integrat…
Two routes to actorhood: Lexicalized potency to act and identification of the actor role
2015
The inference of causality is a crucial cognitive ability and language processing is no exception: recent research suggests that, across different languages, the human language comprehension system attempts to identify the primary causer of the state of affairs described (the “actor”) quickly and unambiguously (Bornkessel-Schlesewsky and Schlesewsky, 2009). This identification can take place verb-independently based on certain prominence cues (e.g., case, word order, animacy). Here, we present two experiments demonstrating that actor potential is also encoded at the level of individual nouns (a king is a better actor than a beggar). Experiment 1 collected ratings for 180 German nouns on 12 …
Emotional Connotations of Musical Instrument Timbre in Comparison With Emotional Speech Prosody: Evidence From Acoustics and Event-Related Potentials
2018
Music and speech both communicate emotional meanings in addition to their domain-specific contents. But it is not clear whether and how the two kinds of emotional meanings are linked. The present study is focused on exploring the emotional connotations of musical timbre of isolated instrument sounds through the perspective of emotional speech prosody. The stimuli were isolated instrument sounds and emotional speech prosody categorized by listeners into anger, happiness and sadness, respectively. We first analyzed the timbral features of the stimuli, which showed that relations between the three emotions were relatively consistent in those features for speech and music. The results further e…
L'interprete al cinema: stereotipi, pregiudizi e realtà
2020
The figure of the interpreter in history has always oscillated between visibility and invisibility. Although today there is a tendency to give it increasing recognition, some categories (cultural mediators, war and sign interpreters) still remain in a poorly recognized situation and often operate in precarious working conditions. The interpreter as a subject of study has been present in world literature for years. We will investigate what has become the interpreter as a subject in world cinema. What is the semiotic process for which a given image of the interpreter communicates a certain cliché or suggests certain characteristics that the director (or the screenwriter) wanted to highlight. …

«A/traverso» la transizione. Le pratiche culturali del movimento del ’77 e il paradigma artistico
2012
Il cosiddetto movimento del ’77, già negli anni della sua emersione ricondotto alle esperienze delle avanguardie artistiche del primo Novecento, riconfigurò i dispositivi di produzione-fruizione della cultura producendo un capovolgimento – orientato verso l’autorappresentazione politica dell’emergente proletariato giovanile – delle tradizionali categorie e mediazioni sociali ancora agenti nella società fordista.
