Nonporous, Strong, Stretchable, and Transparent Electrospun Aromatic Polyurea Nanocomposites as Potential Anticorrosion Coating Films

This study, for the first time, focused on the fabrication of nonporous polyurea thin films (~200 microns) using the electrospinning method as a novel approach for coating applications. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and hydrophilic-fumed nanosilica (HFNS) were added separately into electrospun polyurea films as nano-reinforcing fillers for the enhancement of properties. Neat polyurea films demonstrated a tensile strength of 14 MPa with an elongation of 360%. At a loading of 0.2% of MWCNTs, the highest tensile strength of 21 MPa and elongation of 402% were obtained, while the water contact angle remained almost unchanged (89°). Mn 12 single-molecule magnets incorporated into mesoporous MCM-41 silica

Abstract The incorporation of four Mn12 derivatives, namely [Mn12O12(O2CR)16(H2O)4] (R=CH3 (1), CH3CH2 (2), C6H5 (3), C6F5 (4)), into the hexagonal channels of the MCM-41 mesoporous silica have been studied. Only the smallest clusters 1 and 2 that are those with compatible size with the pores of MCM-41 could be incorporated into the mesoporous silica. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherm experiments show that the well-ordered hexagonal structure of MCM-41 is preserved and that the Mn12 clusters are inside the pores. Moisture effect on deformability of epoxy/montmorillonite nanocomposite

In this article the moisture effect on deformability of epoxy/montmorillonite nanocomposite was investigated. The change of fracture character and drop of elastic characteristics due to moisture absorption was observed. The estimation of filler morphological peculiarities (platelet stack constitution) in composite and its effect on nanocomposite elastic properties was undertaken. It is shown that the higher number of filler platelet per stack consistently leads to the decrease of nanocomposite elastic properties. Nevertheless prediction by micromechanical model is rough for moistened nanocomposite because of resin structural changes. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010

Intercalation effects in LDPE/o-Montmorillonites nanocomposites

Abstract Typical montmorillonite clays (Cloisite ® Na + , Cloisite ® 30B) were modified by treatment with octadecyl ammonium chloride (ODC) and successive additions of octadecylamine (ODA). XRD analyses of the modified clays indicated an increase of the basal spacing of the (0 0 1) planes depending on the ODC or ODA additions. Nanocomposites were prepared by dispersing the modified clays (3% w/w concentration) in LDPE, using a Brabender mixer. XRD measurements of the obtained products indicated in some cases the achievement of intercalation effects, which were confirmed by TEM analysis. The zero field self-organization of cobalt/surfactant nanocomposite thin films

Cobalt nanostructures have been prepared by a chemical route based on the Co(II) reduction in the confined space of cobalt bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (Co(DEHSS)(2)) reverse micelles dispersed in n-heptane. This procedure involves the rapid formation of surfactant softly coated Co nanostructures followed by a slow separation process of the magnetic-field responsive Co/surfactant nanocomposites from the liquid phase. Ligand removal from soluble CdTe nanocrystals evidenced by time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy

We present experimental studies on the effect of pyridine treatment on the optical properties of ligand-stabilized colloidal CdTe nanocrystals. We demonstrate, by quasi-stationary and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, a drastic reduction in the PL lifetime and a concomitant decrease in the PL yield by more than 90% when dissolving the nanocrystals in pyridine. The pyridine solvent efficiently removes the ligand shell and thus enables a rapid energy transfer from the quantum dot to optically dark surface states or into the solvent. Synthesis of Functional Block Copolymers Carrying One Poly(p-phenylenevinylene) and One Nonconjugated Block in a Facile One-Pot Procedure

Block copolymers composed of a MEH–PPV block and a nonconjugated functional block (molecular weights between 5 and 90 kg/mol) were synthesized in a facile one-pot procedure via ROMP. This one-pot procedure permits the synthesis of numerous block copolymers with little effort. Amphiphilic block copolymers were obtained via incorporation of oxanorbornene carrying a PEG side chain as well as via postpolymerization modification of a reactive ester carrying norbornene derivative with methoxypoly(ethylene glycol)amine. Mild Homogeneous Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles through the Epoxide Route: Kinetics, Mechanisms, and Related One‐Pot Composites

A new one-pot homogeneous methodology at room temperature to obtain Au nanoparticles (AuNP) on the basis of the epoxide route is presented. The proposed method takes advantage of the homogenous generation of OH- moieties driven by epoxide ring-opening, mediated by chloride nucleophilic attack. Once reached alkaline conditions, the reducing medium allows the quantitative formation of AuNP under well-defined kinetic control. A stabilizing agent, such as polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) or cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), is required to maintain the AuNP stable.
