Improvement of interaction in and properties of PMMA-MWNT nanocomposites through microwave assisted acid treatment of MWNT

Soluble derivatives of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) embedded in a poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) matrix forming thick, homogeneous and transparent nanocomposites, were prepared and characterized. A new photo-assisted method using microwaves, to purify the MWNTs from amorphous carbon and synthesis catalyst clusters, was tested in a sulphonitric mix. This method shortened the processing time compared to other methods. Pristine and functionalized MWNTs were introduced into the MMA, then in situ photo-polymerized. Clay-based drug-delivery systems: what does the future hold?

Clays for drug delivery have been used from ancient time due to the large availability of clay minerals and their unprecedented properties. The empirical use of nanoclays from the past is converted in a stimulating scientific task aimed at building up nanoarchitectonic vehicles for drug delivery in a targeted and stimuli-responsive fashion. Here the historical aspects are discussed; next the modern examples of applications of different clay-based materials are discussed. N-doped carbon networks: alternative materials tracing new routes for activating molecular hydrogen.

The fragmentation of molecular hydrogen on N-doped carbon networks was investigated by using molecular (polyaromatic macrocycles) as well as truncated and periodic (carbon nanotubes) models. The computational study was focused on the ergonicity analysis of the reaction and on the properties of the transition states involved when constellations of three or four pyridinic nitrogen atom defects are present in the carbon network. Calculations show that whenever N-defects are embedded in species characterized by large conjugated π-systems, either in polyaromatic macrocycles or carbon nanotubes, the corresponding H2 bond cleavage is largely exergonic. DFT study of zigzag (n, 0) single-walled carbon nanotubes: 13C NMR chemical shifts

Abstract 13 C NMR chemical shifts of selected finite-size models of pristine zigzag single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with a diameter of ∼0.4–0.8 nm and length up to 2.2 nm were studied theoretically. Results for finite SWCNTs models containing 1, 4 and 10 adjacent bamboo-type units were compared with data obtained for infinite tubes in order to estimate the reliability of small finite models in predicting magnetic properties of real-size nanotubes and to assess their tube-length dependence. Abstract Density functional theory (DFT) studies on adsorption of several gaseous homo- and hetero-diatomic molecules (AB) including H2, O2, N2, NO and CO on external surface of H-capped pristine armchair (5, 5) single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) were conducted. Structures of C70H10 and the corresponding C70H10–AB adducts were fully optimized at the B3LYP/6-311G* level of theory. Calculated HOMO/LUMO energy gaps (Eg), 13C NMR chemical shifts and IR/Raman parameters were analyzed and critically compared with available experimental data. Effect of elliptical deformation on molecular polarizabilities of model carbon nanotubes from atomic increments.

The interacting induced dipole polarization model implemented in our program POLAR is used for the calculation of the dipole-dipole polarizability alpha. The method is tested with single-wall carbon nanotube models as a function of nanotube radius and elliptical deformation. The results for polarizability follow the same trend as reference calculations performed with our version of the program PAPID. For the zigzag tubes, the polarizability is found to follow a remarkably simple law, that is, it varies as the inverse of the radius. A dramatic effect is also found with elliptical deformation. Plasmonic Nanosensors for Simultaneous Quantification of Multiple Protein–Protein Binding Affinities

Most of current techniques used for the quantification of protein-protein interactions require the analysis of one pair of binding partners at a time. Herein we present a label-free, simple, fast, and cost-effective route to characterize binding affinities between multiple macromolecular partners simultaneously, using optical dark-field spectroscopy and individual protein-functionalized gold nanorods as sensing elements. Our NanoSPR method could easily become a simple and standard tool in biological, biochemical, and medical laboratories.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) based nanostructures owing unique physical properties – high photoluminescence, bio- compatibility and other characteristics, therefore, they attract attention as building blocks suitable for biosensor development. In this research as a target we have used human leukemic cell line IM9 (IM9). IM9 was derived from the patient with a multiple myeloma and expressed cluster of differentiation proteins СD19 on the surface of 85–95% here investigated cancer cells.
