Erratum: Melanoma Unknown Primary Brain Metastasis Treatment With ECHO-7 Oncolytic Virus Rigvir: A Case Report

2018

Melanoma is considered an aggressive malignancy with a tendency of forming metastasis in the brain. Less than 10% of all melanoma cases present with unknown primary tumor location. This diagnose is yet to be fully understood, because there are only theoretical assumptions about the nature of the disease. Melanoma brain metastases have many severe side effects and, unfortunately, any disease related to the brain has limited therapeutic options due to the blood–brain barrier. The course of the disease after a treatment course is complicated to predict, and it is difficult to obtain long-lasting remission. In this report, we describe a female patient with unknown primary melanoma brain metasta…

Salso-bromo-iodine thermal water: a nonpharmacological alternative treatment for postnasal drip-related cough in children with upper respiratory trac…

2018

Postnasal drip (PND)-related cough is a very common symptom in patients with upper respiratory tract infections (URTis). At present, there is not a standard treatment for postnasal drip and postnasal drip-related cough. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the efficacy of a specific salso-bromoiodine thermal water containing hyaluronic acid and grapefruit seed extract (SBI-H-GSE) comparing it with a normal saline solution in children with URTis who refer PND-related symptoms. The study was randomized, single-blind, and controlled. Study group (75 children) was treated with SBI-HGSE and control group (65 children) was treated with a normal saline solution; both compounds were administ…

The burden of Candida species colonization in NICU patients: a colonization surveillance study

2017

Fungal infections are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). The identifi-cation of specific risk factors supports pre-vention of candidemia in neonates. Effec-tive prophylactic strategies have recently become available, but the identification and adequate management of high-risk in-fants is still a priority. Prior colonization is a key risk factor for candidemia. For this reason, surveillance studies to monitor in-cidence, species distribution, and antifun-gal susceptibility profiles, are mandatory. Among 520 infants admitted to our NICU between January 2013 and December 2014, 472 (90.77%) were included in the study. Forty-eight out of 472 (…

Deguna vārstules aktivitātes novērtējums, izmantojot 4 fāžu rinamometru. Jauna parametra ieviešana un statistiskais novērtējums

2017

Statistiskajai analīzei tika izmantots Microsoft Off…

mRNA-induction and cytokine release during in vitro exposure of human nasal respiratory epithelia to methyl methacrylate

2007

Abstract Background Methyl methacrylate (MMA) has been reported to cause histopathological changes in rodent nasal epithelium after inhalation challenges. Data in humans are lacking. Methods In this in vitro design 22 primary cell cultures taken from inferior turbinate tissue of healthy individuals were exposed to MMA concentrations of 50 ppm (German MAK-value) and 200 ppm. mRNA expression and cytokine release of inflammatory mediators were quantified after 4 h and after 24 h. Controls were exposed to synthetic air. Q-PCR analysis was performed for TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1, GMCSF, Cox-1 and Cox-2. ELISA assays were performed from culture supernatants for TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, MCP…

Recombinant virus-like particles of a norovirus (genogroup II strain) administered intranasally and orally with mucosal adjuvants LT and LT(R192G) in…

2003

We investigated the immune response induced by mucosal immunization of BALB/c mice with virus-like particles (VLPs) of a genogroup II norovirus, Dijon171/96 virus, produced in the baculovirus system. VLPs administered alone by the intranasal route induced a high serum antibody response as well as fecal IgA, which were enhanced when the heat-labile Escherichia coli toxin or its non toxic mutant LT(R192G) was coadministered. In these conditions, the oral route was also efficient. Cytokine production by cells from different lymphoid tissues was then assessed after in vitro restimulation. A Th1/Th2-like response was observed in cervical lymph node and Peyer's patch (PP) cell cultures from mice …

A critical role for the cholesterol-associated proteolipids PLP and M6B in myelination of the central nervous system.

2012

The formation of central nervous system myelin by oligodendrocytes requires sterol synthesis and is associated with a significant enrichment of cholesterol in the myelin membrane. However, it is unknown how oligodendrocytes concentrate cholesterol above the level found in nonmyelin membranes. Here, we demonstrate a critical role for proteolipids in cholesterol accumulation. Mice lacking the most abundant myelin protein, proteolipid protein (PLP), are fully myelinated, but PLP-deficient myelin exhibits a reduced cholesterol content. We therefore hypothesized that "high cholesterol" is not essential in the myelin sheath itself but is required for an earlier step of myelin biogenesis that is f…

True vertical validation in facial orthognathic surgery planning

2013

Objectives: To validate the effectiveness of the original standards of True Vertical (TV) Subnasal Line in orthognatic surgery planning. The present study evaluates the changes occurring in patients with skeletal Class II alterations programmed for orthognathic surgery with a view to improving their facial profile. Study design: We showed a series of black profiles (composed by a first control group of subjects with normal occlusion, and another two additional groups comprised patients before –Group 2- and after orthognatic surgical correction of Class II malocclusion -Group 3-) for three groups of observers (orthodontists, surgeons and laypeople). The facial images became black silhouettes…

Self-adjuvanting C18 lipid vinil sulfone-PP2A vaccine: study of the induced immunomodulation against

2017

Despite the importance of the adjuvant in the immunization process, very few adjuvants merge with the antigens in vaccines. A synthetic self-adjuvant oleic-vinyl sulfone (OVS) linked to the catalytic region of recombinant serine/threonine phosphatase 2A from the nematode Angiostrongylus costaricensis (rPP2A) was used for intranasal immunization in mice previously infected with Trichuris muris. The animal intranasal immunization with rPP2A-OVS showed a reduction of 99.01% in the number of the nematode eggs and 97.90% in adult. The immunohistochemical analysis of the intestinal sections showed that in immunized animals with lipopeptide the mucus was significantly higher than in the other expe…

Spray Freeze Dried Lyospheres® for Nasal Administration of Insulin

2021

Pharmacologically active macromolecules, such as peptides, are still a major challenge in terms of designing a delivery system for their transport across absorption barriers and at the same time provide sufficiently high long-term stability. Spray freeze dried (SFD) lyospheres® are proposed here as an alternative for the preparation of fast dissolving porous particles for nasal administration of insulin. Insulin solutions containing mannitol and polyvinylpyrrolidone complemented with permeation enhancing excipients (sodium taurocholate or cyclodextrins) were sprayed into a cooled spray tower, followed by vacuum freeze drying. Final porous particles were highly spherical and mean diameters r…
