Diagnosis of culture-negative endocarditis: The role of the Duke criteria and the impact of transesophageal echocardiography

2001

Abstract Background The Duke criteria have been shown to be more sensitive than the von Reyn criteria in the diagnosis of culture-positive endocarditis but to date have not been fully validated for culture-negative endocarditis (CNE). The aim of this study was (1) to compare the diagnostic accuracy of the Duke criteria versus clinical judgment and the von Reyn criteria in CNE and (2) to assess the diagnostic impact of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) on the Duke criteria in CNE. Methods The study group consisted of 49 patients with suspected CNE in whom the presence (n = 32) or absence (n = 17) of endocarditis was confirmed by surgery, autopsy, or both. All patients underwent transtho…

Validity and reliability of the Migraine-Treatment Optimization Questionnaire.

2009

Our aim was to establish the validity and reliability of a patient-rated Migraine Treatment Optimization Questionnaire (M-TOQ in primary care. Patients who met International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd edn criteria for migraine completed a 19-item questionnaire containing candidate items for the M-TOQ and three questionnaires designed to test convergent/construct validity [Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS), Headache Impact Test (HIT)-6 and Migraine-Specific Quality of Life Scale (MSSQoL)]. A 15-item (M-TOQ15) and a five-item (M-TOQ-5) questionnaire were derived. Two hundred and fifty-three adult patients were recruited. Five treatment optimization domains were iden…

The symptom check-list, SCL-90-R: its use and characteristics in chronic pain patients

2000

The SCL-90-R is a widely-used questionnaire for self-report of psychological distress and multiple aspects of psychopathology, as part of the evaluation of chronic pain patients and other non-psychiatric populations. The aim of this study is the presentation of clinical results of this multidimensional questionnaire in a convenience sample of 3540 chronic pain patients treated in a multidisciplinary pain centre. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), single scale factor analyses and Cronbach's alphas are used to assess the internal structure and correlation to other instruments (CES-D, STAI, MPSS) to assess construct validity. It is shown that the 9 dimension…

Translation and Testing of the Italian Version of FAMCARE-2: Measuring Family Caregivers' Satisfaction With Palliative Care.

2017

Family satisfaction is an important outcome of palliative care and is a critical measure for health care professionals to address when assessing quality of care. The FAMCARE-2 is a widely used measure of family satisfaction with the health care received by both patient and family in palliative care. In this study, a team of Italian researchers culturally adapted the FAMCARE-2 to the Italian language and psychometrically tested the instrument by measuring satisfaction of 185 family caregivers of patients admitted into two palliative care services. FAMCARE-2 showed excellent levels of internal consistency (Cronbach’s α coefficient = .96) and test–retest reliability ( r = .98, p < .01). Th…

Validation of the German Version of the Quality of Dying and Death Questionnaire for Informal Caregivers (QODD-D-Ang).

2015

Abstract Context The quality of dying and death (QOD) influences end-of-life care for patients and their relatives. To the best of our knowledge, there are currently no validated standard instruments for evaluating the QOD of patients in palliative care units (PCUs) in Germany. Objectives This study aimed to validate the German version of the multidimensional questionnaire "Quality of Dying and Death" for informal caregivers (QODD-Deutsch-Angehorige [QODD-D-Ang]) and provide a detailed report on its validity and reliability. Methods The QODD was forward/backward translated following the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer guidelines. Data collected in two German palli…

A confirmatory factor analytic validation of the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory

2015

Abstract Objective Because the postulated three-factor structure of the internationally widely used Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) has not been confirmed yet by a confirmatory factor analytic approach this was the central aim of the current study. Methods From a clinical setting, N  = 373 patients with chronic tinnitus completed the THI and further questionnaires assessing tinnitus-related and psychological variables. In order to analyze the psychometric properties of the THI, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and correlational analyses were conducted. Results CFA provided a statistically significant support for a better fit of the data to the hypothesized three-factor structure ( RMSEA…

Brief assessment of subjective health complaints: Development, validation and population norms of a brief form of the Giessen Subjective Complaints L…

2017

Abstract Objective Although there is no causal relationship to medical morbidity, routine clinical assessment of somatic symptoms aids medical diagnosis and assessment of treatment effectiveness. Regardless of their causes, somatic symptoms indicate suffering, distress, and help-seeking behavior. The aim of the present study was to develop and validate a brief self-report questionnaire to assess somatic symptom strain. Methods A brief form of the Giessen Subjective Complaints List (GBB-8) was developed and validated in a large population sample representative of the Federal Republic of Germany ( N  = 2008). Psychometric analyses included confirmation of factor structure, classical item anal…

Quality of Life in Individuals Affected by Arnold Chiari Malformation: Comparison and Validation of a Measurement Instrument.

2017

BACKGROUND Introduction. Arnold Chiari Malformation (ACM) type I is a pathology whose symptomatology has repercussions for the quality of life of those affected by it. Quality-of-life measurement instruments can allow the severity of the impact of Chiari type I malformation on patients' lives to be monitored. The Chiari Symptom Profile (CSP) is a valid and reliable instrument designed for this purpose. The aim of the study was to adapt the CSP to Spanish and to explore the reliability and validity of this construct in the context of Spanish-speaking patients with ACM. METHODS The English CSP instrument has a good internal validity and consistency. We used a standardized procedure for the li…

Barriers to physical activity in coronary artery disease patients: Development and validation of a new scale

2017

Abstract Objective To develop and validate a self-report questionnaire to measure barriers to regular physical activity (PA) in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods Phase 1: 17 patients completed a semi-structured interview. After grouping and reformulating the reported barriers, their pertinence was reevaluated by the patients. Then, a decision algorithm was used to select items. A principal component analysis was performed to determine content validity. Phase 2: 49 patients completed the questionnaire resulting from phase 1 twice, 7 days apart, and questionnaires to evaluate depression, anxiety, and the level of physical activity. Construct validity was evaluated by…
