Solid‐state NMR Spectroscopy of Iodine(I) Complexes

Solid-state NMR has been applied to a series of Barluenga-type iodine(I) [L-I-L]PF6 (L=pyridine, 4-ethylpyridine, 4-dimethylaminopyridine, isoquinoline) complexes as their hexafluorophosphate salts, as well as their respective non-liquid ligands (L), their precursor silver(I) complexes, and the respective N-methylated pyridinium and quinolinium hexafluorophoshate salts. These results are compared and contrasted to the corresponding solution studies and single-crystal X-ray structures. As the first study of its kind on the solid-state NMR behavior of halogen(I) complexes, practical considerations are also discussed to encourage wider utilization of this technique in the future. peerReviewed

A case of combined Farber and Sandhoff disease

We describe a patient with the biochemically established combination of Farber and Sandhoff disease. A 6-month-old girl of consanguineous Turkish parents presented with hoarseness, stridor, scattered skin nodules, painful swelling of hand joints and ankles, and cherry-red macular spots. Until the age of 2 years her motor and physical condition deteriorated distinctly, however her mental state remained unchanged. A biopsied skin nodule disclosed lysosomal inclusions within storage cells that were typical of Farber disease (curved tubular structures). Abstract Italy has a monitoring system for genetic testing, consisting in a periodic census of clinical and laboratory activities performed in the country. The experience is limited, however, concerning the translation of genomic testing for complex diseases into clinical practice. For the first time the Italian Ministry of Health has introduced a policy strategic plan on genomics and predictive medicine within the 2010–2012 National Prevention Plan. This achievement was supported by the Italian Network for Public Health Genomics (GENISAP) and will likely contribute to the integration of public health genomics into health care in the country. The main hypothesis of this study was that if stomach volume is correlated with food intake it can be estimated without laborious and destructive direct measurement. Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), ca. 500^1300 g, were starved for 1, 4, 8 or16 days at151C after which they were fed in excess with dry pellets containing known amounts of X-raydense markers. Immediately after feeding the ¢sh were killed, X rayed and weighed. Then the stomach was dissected, its contents removed and weighed, and stomach volume was measured. Progressive chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common in lysinuric protein intolerance (LPI), a primary inherited aminoaciduria characterized by massive Lysine excretion in urine. This study determined whether Lysine overloading of human proximal tubular cells (HK-2) in culture enhances apoptotic cell loss and its associated mechanisms. Inborn errors of metabolism are inherited biochemical disorders caused by lack of a functional enzyme, transmembrane transporter, or similar protein, which then results in blockage of the corresponding metabolic pathway. Taken individually, inborn errors of metabolism are rare. However, as a group these diseases are relatively frequent and they may account for most of neonatal mortality and need of health resources.
