Concepts and Categories of Emotion in East Asia
2012
2006
International audience; This study concerns discrimination bias in relations between work groups. As new developments in categorisation theory have shown, several factors modulate the effects of inter-group categorisation. Among these, status is viewed as introducing conflict between groups. We studied the impact of this factor in a work situation where status was not linked to power, choosing a firm in which relations between groups were conflict provoking. Three work groups within the same mobile phone firm were selected on the basis of their status : the ''Hard'' group, considered as high status in relation to the low status ''Administration'' group, and the ''Production'' group with an …
Quantification of intracranial contribution to rheoencephalography by a numerical model of the head
2000
Abstract Objectives : Partial contributions of intracranial and extracranial circulation to rheoencephalography (REG) remain uncertain. The main goal of this work is to determine theoretically the capability of REG techniques to reflect intracranial blood flow. Methods : Head and current injection electrodes were computationally modeled to assess REG sensitivity to brain and scalp conductivity changes. Data obtained were related to tissue perfusions to calculate the partial contribution of cerebral blood perfusion to REG I, REG II and monopolar REG and to assess their amplitudes. Results : When REG I and monopolar REG were used, the theoretical maximum of intracranial contribution was reach…
Influence of inheritance and pedogenesis on heavy metal distribution in soils of Sicily, Italy
2000
Abstract The recognition of the potential health hazards associated with heavy metals has focused attention on the levels and behaviours of these elements both in natural and contaminated environments. Various soil types developed from different parent materials in Sicily, Italy, have been analysed in order to compare heavy metal distribution under different geopedological conditions. Total metal concentrations, metal partitioning and distribution profiles are discussed in relation to the inheritance factor and pedogenic processes. Parent material composition largely influences the contents of heavy metals in most of the analysed soils, mainly differentiating pedons for their metal concentr…
Molecular Evolution of Lactate Dehydrogenase in the Developing Nervous Tissue*
1964
Publisher Summary This chapter describes both electrophoretic and catalytic studies on lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in the developing brain. It has been found that the enzyme exhibits at birth a composition that gradually changes to attain the final pattern observed in the adult. The neurochemical findings on LDH isozymes parallel the rapid growth in the first days after birth. Isozyme E, which is not present in detectable amounts 2 days after birth, represents 15% of the enzyme on the 22nd day. Similarly, the percentage decrease of isozyme B is quite steep at the beginning. Nevertheless, the final pattern is attained only at the end of the 2nd month that is, when the cerebral cortex is full…
Kompensācija cietušajam par nodarīto kaitējumu kriminālprocesā
2015
Mūsdienās aizvien ir aktuāla morālā kaitējuma kompensācijas noteikšana kriminālprocesā, it sevišķi tāpēc, ka morālam kaitējumam nepastāv precīzi nosakāms naudas ekvivalents.
Fiberless, Multi-Channel fNIRS-EEG System Based on Silicon Photomultipliers: Towards Sensitive and Ecological Mapping of Brain Activity and Neurovasc…
2020
Portable neuroimaging technologies can be employed for long-term monitoring of neurophysiological and neuropathological states. Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) and Electroencephalography (EEG) are highly suited for such a purpose. Their multimodal integration allows the evaluation of hemodynamic and electrical brain activity together with neurovascular coupling. An innovative fNIRS-EEG system is here presented. The system integrated a novel continuous-wave fNIRS component and a modified commercial EEG device. fNIRS probing relied on fiberless technology based on light emitting diodes and silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). SiPMs are sensitive semiconductor detectors, whose large…

Twin studies on the association of physical activity with cognitive and cerebral outcomes
2020
Regular physical activity (PA) offers positive effects on the human body. However, the effects of PA on cognition and in the brain are less clear. In this paper, we narratively review the relationship of PA with cognition and dementia, first from general perspective and then through genetically informed studies on the topic. Then we move on to imaging studies on exercise and brain anatomy first by presenting an overall picture of the topic and then discussing brain imaging studies addressing PA and brain structure in twins in more detailed way. Regarding PA and cognition or dementia, genetically informed studies are uncommon, even though the relationship between PA and cognitive ageing has …
