Tumour necrosis factor in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis patients in blood serum and synovial fluid
2010
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease of unknown cause which affects the ability of elderly people to work. There is strong evidence to suggest that inflammatory mediators such as tumour necrosis factor α (TNFα) and interleukin 1 (IL1) have a critical role in the pathogenesis of RA. Biological treatment blocks pathological pathways in the actions of these proinflammatory cytokines. The aim of this study was …
Estudio clínico, radiográfico y plasmático de la osteonecrosis de los maxilares por bisfosfonatos en un grupo de183 pacientes
2016
Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a particular form of chronic osteomyelitis caused by bisphosphonates (BF) or by other pharmacological or anti-angiogenic drugs. The BF are potent drugs inhibitors of osteoclasts by exerting a strong interaction with these cells, producing a sharp decrease of bone resorption. Objectives: To analyse clinical and radiologic characteristics as well as differences in the plasma levels of the Activation Nuclear Kappa receptor ligand (RANKL) and of osteoprotegerin (OPG) in a group of patients with osteonecrosis and compared to healthy controls. In addition, within the Group of patients with osteonecrosis maxillary study if there is relationship between plasma levels of …
Both Resistance and Agility Training Increase Cortical Bone Density in 75- to 85-Year-Old Women With Low Bone Mass
2004
A randomized, controlled, single-blinded 25-wk prospective study was conducted to compare the effects of group-based resistance and agility training on bone, as measured by both dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT), in older women with low bone mass. Ninety-eight community-dwelling women aged 75-85 yr were randomized to one of three experimental groups: resistance training (n = 32), agility training (n = 34), or stretching (sham exercise) (n = 32). Total hip, femoral neck, and trochanteric bone mineral density (BMD) were measured by DXA. Peripheral QCT measurements were performed at the tibia and radius. The pQCT outcome measures at t…
Compliance and arthralgias in clinical therapy (COMPACT): Assessment of the incidence of arthralgia, therapy costs, and compliance in the first year …
2012
e11040^ Background: Aromatase Inhibitors (AI) are well established as adjuvant endocrine treatment for postmenopausal women with HR+ early breast cancer (EBC). However, clinical trial data show higher frequently of arthralgia with AI than tamoxifen. As arthralgia may be greatly influencing compliance to adjuvant therapy, we designed a prospective trial to collect real world data on the effects of AI-associated arthralgia on patient compliance, patient outcomes and treatment costs of arthralgia. Methods: COMPACT is an open, prospective non-interventional study (NCT00857012) assessing the incidence of arthralgia, therapy costs, and compliance within the first year of adjuvant anastrozole (AN…
Osteoprotegerin (OPG) and RANKL expression and distribution in developing human craniomandibular joint.
2005
Abstract During embryogenesis the bone tissue of craniomandibular joint (CMJ) is formed through two pathways: intramembranous ossification and endochondral ossification. The development process is under the control of regulatory factors. The osteoprotegerin (OPG) and the receptor activator of nuclear factor (NF)-κB ligand are key regulators of osteoclastogenesis. The aim of this study is the localization of OPG and RANKL mRNA and protein in the foetal CMJ by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridization (ISH). The main results were: OPG and RANKL mRNA and protein were co-localized in the same cell types; OPG and RANKL were specially immunolocated in osteogenic cells; immunolabeling wa…

Conserved TCR β chain usage in reactive arthritis; evidence for selection by a putative HLA-B27-associated autoantigen
2002
Previous work suggested that expanded CD8+ T-cell clones in the synovial fluid (SF) of HLA-B27+ patients with reactive arthritis (ReA) preferentially use the T-cell receptor variable region (TCRBV) 1, similar CDR3 sequences, and joining region (BJ) 2S3. To determine the range of conservation and disease-specificity of CDR3-sequences, we analyzed the TCRBV1-J2S3 repertoire from 33 healthy HLA-B27+ individuals, patients with various types of spondyloarthropathies (SpA), and with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) by CDR3-spectratyping. After collection and database submission of all available TCRB-CDR3 from HLA-B27-restricted or SpA-derived T cells, we systematically screened the entire human sequence…
Decreased serum levels of sex steroids associated with osteoporosis in a group of Romanian male patients
2016
Abstract Introduction. With age, sex hormone deficiency leads to reduced bone mineral density (BMD) in men. The aim of our research is to analyze the role of serum sex steroids in assessing BMD in the men included in this study. Materials and methods. This cross-sectional study included 146 men aged 65-85 years old with osteopenia or osteoporosis (study group) and 121 men with normal BMD (control group). Serum levels of total testosterone (Tt) and free testosterone (Tf) were measured by immunoassay, and estradiol (E2) levels were measured by the immunoenzymatic method. Femoral neck and lumbar spine BMD was examined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Results. Tf and E2 deficiency was signi…
HLA class II haplotypes differentiate between the adult autoimmune polyglandular syndrome types II and III.
2013
Background: Genetics of the adult autoimmune polyglandular syndrome (APS) is poorly understood. Aim: The aim of this study was to gain further insight into the genetics of the adult APS types. Site: The study was conducted at a university referral center. Methods: The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II alleles, haplotypes, and genotypes were determined in a large cohort of patients with APS, autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD), and type 1 diabetes and in healthy controls by the consistent application of high-resolution typing at a four-digit level. Results: Comparison of the allele and haplotype frequencies significantly discriminated patients with APS vs AITD and controls. The HLA class…
