Neuromuscular junction disassembly and muscle fatigue in mice lacking neurotrophin-4

Neurotrophin-4 (NT-4) is produced by slow muscle fibers in an activity-dependent manner and promotes growth and remodeling of adult motorneuron innervation. However, both muscle fibers and motor neurons express NT-4 receptors, suggesting bidirectional NT-4 signaling at the neuromuscular junction. Mice lacking NT-4 displayed enlarged and fragmented neuromuscular junctions with disassembled postsynaptic acetylcholine receptor (AChR) clusters, reduced AChR binding, and acetylcholinesterase activity. Activation of gp 130 by IL-6/soluble IL-6 receptor induces neuronal differentiation

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) on target cells binds to the specific IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) and subsequently induces homodimerization of the signal-transducing protein gp130. Cells which express gp130 but no IL-6R and which therefore do not respond to IL-6 can be stimulated by the complex of IL-6 and soluble IL-6R (slL-6R). Here we show that on rat pheochromocytoma cells (PC12), the combination of IL-6 and slL-6R but not IL-6 alone induces expression of c-fos, GAP-43 and neuron-specific enolase followed by neuron-specific differentiation and formation of a neuronal network. We report herein a study of the hydrolysis of Tabun mimic DCNP in the presence of different amines, aminoalcohols and glycols as potential suitable organocatalysts for DCNP degradation. Experiments were performed in CD3CN in the presence of 5% D2O, which is a suitable solvent mixture to follow the DCNP hydrolysis. These studies allowed the definition of different DCNP depletion paths, resulting in the formation of diethylphosphoric acid, tetraethylpyrophosphate and phosphoramide species as final products. Scalp, basal epidural and intravascular far-field recordings after median nerve stimulation: evidence for a separate N18a potential

Far-field somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) after median nerve stimulation were recorded from scalp- (Fz), epidural- (ED) and intravascular electrodes (basilar artery [Bas]) to study the nature of the controversial N18a component of the widespread N18 potential. In healthy volunteers frequently an N18a potential was recorded at Fz. Simultaneous Fz and ED recordings at the pontomesencephalic junction as well as Bas-recordings at the caudal basilar artery showed N18a components identical in latency and shape. After destruction of the peripheral vestibular system which is not activated by moving large-field visual stimulation, not only labyrinthine-ocular reflexes but also optokinetic-ocular responses related to the "velocity storage" mechanism are abolished. In the normal monkey optokinetic-ocular responses are reflected in sustained activity changes of central vestibular neurons within the vestibular nuclei. Synergetic and redundant information flow detected by unnormalized Granger causality: application to resting state fMRI

Objectives: We develop a framework for the analysis of synergy and redundancy in the pattern of information flow between subsystems of a complex network. Methods: The presence of redundancy and/or synergy in multivariate time series data renders difficult to estimate the neat flow of information from each driver variable to a given target. Health-related quality of life of patients with zygomatic fracture.

Background: The objective was to evaluate health-related quality of life (HRQoL) before and after surgical treatment of zygomatic complex fracture and assess patients’ perceptions of the aesthetic and functional outcomes of surgery. Material and Methods: A prospective study of 79 adult patients before and after surgery for zygomatic complex fracture was conducted. HRQoL was measured using the generic 15-dimensional (15D) instrument, and patient satisfaction was assessed by an additional questionnaire.
