Robustness of dynamic gene regulatory networks in Neisseria
2014
Gene regulatory networks are made of highly tuned, sparse and dynamical operations. We consider the case of the Neisseria meningitidis bacterium, a causative agent of life-threatening infections such as meningitis, and aim to infer a robust net- work of interactions across sixty proteins based on a detailed time course gene expres- sion study. We consider the problem of estimating a sparse dynamic Gaussian graphical model with L1 penalized maximum likelihood under a structured precision matrix. The structure can consist of specific time dynamics, known presence or absence of links in the graphical model or equality constraints on the parameters. The authors developed a new optimization algo…
Student mobility: A systemic approach to preferential patterns in higher education
2022
The thesis is a collection of three essays with a “fil rouge”, namely the study of Italian student mobility, 2008 to 2017, analyzed systemically. The main objective of the thesis is to develop statistical methods suitable to identifying preferential mobility patterns starting from the micro-data of a mobility network and applying these methods to reveal preferential patterns of mobility among Italian students with a particular focus on students from Sicily. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that chain migration, within the framework of a network analysis, has been applied to the study of Italian student mobility. In each of the three chapters, there are data analysis tool…
Statistically Validated Networks for assessing topic quality in LDA models
2022
Probabilistic topic models have become one of the most widespread machine learning technique for textual analysis purpose. In this framework, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) (Blei et al., 2003) gained more and more popularity as a text modelling technique. The idea is that documents are represented as random mixtures over latent topics, where a distribution overwords characterizes each topic. Unfortunately, topic models do not guarantee the interpretability of their outputs. The topics learned from the model may be only characterized by a set of irrelevant or unchained words, being useless for the interpretation. Although many topic-quality metrics were proposed (Newman et al., 2009; Alet…
Statistically Validated Networks for evaluating coherence in topic models

MEASURING TOPIC COHERENCE THROUGH STATISTICALLY VALIDATED NETWORKS
2020
Topic models arise from the need of understanding and exploring large text document collections and predicting their underlying structure. Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) (Blei et al., 2003) has quickly become one of the most popular text modelling techniques. The idea is that documents are represented as random mixtures over latent topics, where a distribution over words characterizes each topic. Unfortunately, topic models give no guaranty on the interpretability of their outputs. The topics learned from texts may be characterized by a set of irrelevant or unchained words. Therefore, topic models require validation of the coherence of estimated topics. However, the automatic evaluation …
STRANIERI, MERIDIONALI O PROVINCIALI? I CONSUMI NEL TEMPO LIBERO DELLE SECONDE GENERAZIONI
2022
In this paper, we analyze consumption patterns of leisure time among young people belonging to the so-called “second generation” of immigrants in Italy. Leisure time consumption describes how young immigrants use cultural products and services. We analyze data collected by the ISTAT through the survey on the “second generations” (2015). A comparison of leisure consumption patterns between second-generation immigrants and their Italian peers does not show significant differences. Rather, differences in consumption styles are associated to gender (male/female), geographic area of residence (North/South), and size of the municipality (large municipality/small municipality) of residence.
Iconic framework for cooperative coding
2018
The description of an innovative framework built on top of Web-based visual programming environment is the primary aim of this contribution. In the last decade, many frameworks oriented to visual languages have been introduced in literature to improve the skill on programming languages, but at the best of our knowledge, no framework has been specially designed to support collaborative work on heterogeneous distributed environments. Therefore, SIRENE introduces a new framework in which beginners and experts can cooperate to develop algorithms by using a visual and iconic paradigm. Students, in the classroom or connected from everywhere, can be involved into the definition of the algorithm, c…
Incoherent dispersive shocks in the spectral evolution of random waves
2013
We predict theoretically and numerically the existence of incoherent dispersive shock waves. They manifest themselves as an unstable singular behavior of the spectrum of incoherent waves that evolve in a noninstantaneous nonlinear environment. This phenomenon of "spectral wave breaking" develops in the weakly nonlinear regime of the random wave. We elaborate a general theoretical formulation of these incoherent objects on the basis of a weakly nonlinear statistical approach: a family of singular integro-differential kinetic equations is derived, which provides a detailed deterministic description of the incoherent dispersive shock wave phenomenon.
Energy Efficient Resource Allocation for Wireless Powered UAV Wireless Communication System with Short Packet
2023
The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which is prominent in its flexibility and low cost, is considered to be fully utilized in the future wireless communication system to provide flexible services and improve connectivities. In this paper, we investigate the resource allocation problem in a wireless powered UAV communication system. In this considered system, The UAV acts as hybrid access point (HAP), which can first perform wireless power transfer in the downlink and charge the Internet of Thing (IoT) user devices (UDs). The UDs can use the harvested energy to deliver the data to the UAV. In the uplink, we explicitly consider short packet communication (SPC) as the transmission feature, whic…
