Networks of manufacturers and retailers

2011

We study the endogenous formation of networks between manufacturers of differentiated goods and multi-product retailers who interact in a successive duopoly. Joint consent is needed to establish and/or maintain a costly link between a manufacturer and a retailer. We find that only three distribution networks are stable for particular values of the degree of product differentiation and link costs: (i) the non-exclusive distribution & non-exclusive dealing network in which both retailers distribute both products is stable for intermediate degree of product differentiation and small link costs; (ii) the exclusive distribution & exclusive dealing network in which each retailer distributes a dif…

R&D networks among unionized firms

2005

We develop a model of strategic networks in order to analyze how trade unions will affect the stability and efficiency of R&D collaboration networks in an oligopolistic industry with three firms. Whenever firms settle wages, the complete network is always pairwise stable and the partially connected network is stable if and only if spillovers are large enough. If spillovers are small, the complete network is the efficient network; otherwise, the efficient network is the partially connected network. Thus, a conflict between stability and efficiency may occur: efficient networks are pairwise stable, but the reverse is not true. Strong stability even reinforces this conflict. However, once unio…

Teoría de la Participación. Sugerencias analíticas

2002

Human groups may be analysed as organisations of networks of relationships between their members. This article proposes an exercise in theoretic speculation about participation and democracy based on the analytic tools of a relational-informational theory the bases of which come from evolutionalism and the Information Economy. This analytical framework may clarify the nature of macro-collective citizenship, micro-formal group of the company and the fabric of the emergent and informal communicative relations of society and the market. As a humanist heuristic which revindicates the resource to literary and philosophic sources of knowledge, work offers alternative explainations to the preferen…

An experimental analysis of team production in networks

2010

Experimental and empirical evidence highlights the role of networks on social outcomes. In this paper we test the properties of exogenously fixed networks in team production. Subjects make the same decisions in a team-work environment under four different organizational networks: The line, the circle, the star, and the complete network. In all the networks, links make information available to neighbors. This design allows us to analyze decisions across networks and a variety of subjects’ types in a standard linear team production game. Contribution levels differ significantly across networks and the star is the most efficient incomplete one. Moreover, our results suggest that subjects act a…

Transitions out of unemployment: The role of social networks' topology and firms' recruitment strategies

2011

In this paper we study the effects of job contact networks on out-of-unemployment transitions. We find that social connections produce sizable increases in upward mobility from unemployment and, caeteris paribus, symmetric network topologies perform better than asymmetric ones. Furthermore, in scale-free networks the probability of transitions out of unemployment increases in the exponent of the power-law degree distribution, but its value is much lower than the one attainable in Poisson random networks. In addition, and most interestingly, these results strongly depends on the different hypotheses on the firms' recruitment strategy.

Interlocking directorates in sports organization network Focus in this article is on interlocking directorates in sports organization network. The aim is to study the networks ́ structure and how it has changed during the time period 1993–2014. The data consists of central organizations boards and states sport policy working groups (n=121). The data have been analysed in Ucinet-network program. Results indicates that power-elite have come narrow year by year, but there ́s seven organization which have been in central position in every decade. The conclusion is, that in the sports organization network, there have been at the same both momentariness and perfusion, but the power-elite have bee…

An inherited name as the foundation of a person's identity: How the memory of a dead person lived on in the names of his or her descendants

2012

A personal name has always played a central role in the formation of an individual’s identity. In addition to the surname, the forename also defined his or her place within the family community, which for most people was the most important target in the identification process, especially in the early modern period. The identities of the persons in rural families were also to a great extent based on personal names inherited from forebears and the images thus created. In this article, I examine to what extent the naming practices of the population in the hinterland Finnish countryside and the identities created by them were connected with ancestors. The study spans a quite long period, from t…

Maritime Information Networks between Northern and Southern Europe during the Eighteenth century

2019

International trade during the 18th century is a case in point through which to study in-depth the challenges of asymmetric information. The challenges can be divided into three categories: availability, reliability and usability of information. This article discusses the organization of trade and shipping between Northern and Southern Europe. The access, reliability and use of information were problems for merchant-shipowners during the 18th century. The solutions adopted were partly contradictory: the aim to reduce information asymmetry on one determinant, might incur costs on the other.
