Application principles of excimer lasers in ophthalmology

Abstract Excimer lasers (193 nm) can be used for photoablation of the human cornea due to their specific physical characteristics. This laser is applied in corneal refractive surgery for the targeted removal of corneal tissue for the purpose of correcting refractive errors. This article provides a short overview of the scientific development of excimer lasers for use in ophthalmic surgery and of the range of applications of these tools.

Skin autofluorescence photo-bleaching and photo-memory

Photo-bleaching of in-vivo skin autofluorescence intensity under continuous low power laser irradiation has been studied. Temporal behavior of single-spot fluorescence and spectral fluorescent images have been studied at continuous 405 nm, 473 nm and 532 nm laser excitation and/or pre-irradiation, with power densities well below the laser-skin safety limits. Skin autofluorescence photo-memory effects (laser signatures) have been observed and analyzed, as well.

Some observational studies have suggested that the Mediterranean diet may reduce the risk of breast cancer. Optical analysis to predict outcomes after implantation of a double intraocular lens magnification device.

Purpose To analyze the effect of different optical parameters of the eye on the outcomes of implantation of a double intraocular lens (IOL) magnification device in patients with low vision. Setting Fundacion Oftalmologica del Mediterraneo, Valencia, Spain. Jugular pacing lead extraction with laser sheath: a case report.

Over the past 20 years, the number of patients with pacemakers (PM) or implantable cardioverter defibrillators has risen markedly; consequently, an increasing number of lead-removal procedures have become necessary. Biophysics of venous return from the brain from the perspective of the pathophysiology of chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency

This article discusses the biophysical aspects of venous outflow from the brain in healthy individuals and in patients with chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency. Blood flows out of the brain differently, depending on body position. In the supine position it flows out mainly through internal jugular veins, while in the upright position it uses the vertebral veins. This phenomenon is probably not due to the active regulation of the flow but instead results from the collapse of jugular veins when the head is elevated. The severity of aortic stenosis (AS) has traditionally been graded by measuring hemodynamic parameters of transvalvular pressure gradient, ejection jet velocity, or estimating valve orifice area. Recent research has highlighted limitations of these criteria at effectively grading AS in presence of left ventricle (LV) dysfunction. We hypothesized that simulations coupling the aorta and LV could provide meaningful insight into myocardial biomechanical derangements that accompany AS. Public health nurses’ concerns in preschool-aged children’s health check-ups

The aim is to describe Finnish public health nurses’ concerns during regular health check-ups of preschool-aged children. In 2011, focus-group interviews were conducted with 12 public health nurses. The data were analysed using inductive content analysis. Public health nurses’ concerns dealt with the healthy growth and development of children and their ability to cope with difficult family situations, as well as the everyday reality of parenting.
