Conceptual design of prestressed slab bridges through one-way flexural load balancing

2013

In this paper a study on prestressed concrete slab bridges is presented. A design philosophy based on the concept of load balancing through prestressing is proposed in order to minimize the effects of delayed deformations due to creep. Aspects related to the stress redistribution inside these bridges for time-dependent phenomena are analyzed and discussed, by applying the principles of aging linear visco-elasticity. Prestressing is seen as an equivalent external load which counterbalances the permanent loads applied to the bridge, nullifying the elastic deflections due to sustained loads, and thus avoiding the related delayed deformations. An optimization of the structural behavior through …

From 160 to 20 to 1 odorant: steps in a chemo-ethological strategy to identify a mammalian pheromone

2005

This paper presents the strategy used to fractionate a complex odorant mixture into 20 candidate compounds, to finally single out a compound which activity explains the activity of the whole mixture. The joint chemical-behavioral approach will be outlined, and followed by a description of the experiments permitting to enter the isolated key-compound into the category of biologically-active compounds termed "pheromone".

Chemical Constituents and Biological Properties of Genus Doronicum (Asteraceae)

2021

The genus Doronicum, belonging to tribe Senecioneae (Fam. Asteraceae), is found mainly in the Asia, Europe and North Africa. This genus of plant has always been used in traditional medicinal treatments due to the many biological properties shown such as killing parasitic worms and for relieving constipation, as well as to improve heart health, to alleviate pain and inflammation, to treat insect bites, etc. According to the World Flora the genus Doronicum contains 39 subordinate taxa.[1-3] The purpose of this article, which covers data published from 1970 to 2021 with more than 110 articles, aims to carry out a complete and critical review of the Doronicum genus, examining traditional uses a…

Effetti delle epoche e modalità di concimazione su produzione e qualità del finocchio. Effects of time and method of fertilizer application on yield …

2010

Two field trials were carried out in Sicily during fall-winter and spring season to determine the influence of 9 fertilization treatments, obtained by changing the time (pre-plant and/or post-plant fertilization), and method (broadcast fertilization and/or fertigation) of fertilizer application and the type of fertilizer (mineral, organic, slow release fertilizers) on yield and quality of fennel. An unfertilized treatment (control) was also included. In all fertilized treatments, macronutrients were applied at the following total rates (kg ha-1): N (350), P2O5 (100), K2O (208). In both trials the highest yield and mean bulb weight was obtained by pre-planting application of all mineral fert…

Chemical composition of the essential oil from different vegetative parts of Foeniculum vulgare subsp. piperitum (Ucria) Coutinho (Umbelliferae) grow…

2021

In the present study, the chemical compositions of the essential oils from roots, stems, leaves and fruits of Foeniculum vulgare subsp. piperitum collected in Sicily were evaluated by GC and GC-MS. The main components of the roots were terpinolene (33.15%), gamma-terpinene (12.18%) and fenchyl acetate (11.23%). Stems and leaves were very rich in alpha-phellandrene (36.85% and 41.59%, respectively) and beta-phellandrene (19.68% and 25.79%, respectively), whereas the main components of fruits were terpinolene (20.10%) and limonene (17.84%)These results were compared with those of the EOs of the same vegetative parts of Foeniculum vulgare subsp. vulgare, collected in the same station and in th…

The proanthocyanidin content as a tool to differentiate between Lotus tenuis and L. corniculatus individuals

2012

Abstract Lotus tenuis Wald et Kit and Lotus corniculatus L. are conspicuous elements of the agricultural landscape for cattle production. In South America, commercial L. tenuis stocks usually present contaminations with L. corniculatus, what brings about an important economical injure to the forage producers. A way to reduce or avoid loses is to assess the purity degree of L. tenuis seed lots before seeding. Methods so far described for the diagnosis of Lotus species when flowers are not available are lengthy, time consuming, need the implementation of sophisticated laboratories and are relatively expensive. It has been shown that Lotus species accumulate variable proanthocyanidins amounts,…

CommercialOriganum compactumBenth. andCinnamomum zeylanicumBlume essential oils against natural mycoflora in Valencia rice

2015

Chemical composition of commercial Origanum compactum and Cinnamomum zeylanicum essential oils and the antifungal activity against pathogenic fungi isolated from Mediterranean rice grains have been investigated. Sixty-one compounds accounting for more than 99.5% of the total essential oil were identified by using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Carvacrol (43.26%), thymol (21.64%) and their biogenetic precursors p-cymene (13.95%) and γ-terpinene (11.28%) were the main compounds in oregano essential oil, while the phenylpropanoids, eugenol (62.75%), eugenol acetate (16.36%) and (E)-cinnamyl acetate (6.65%) were found in cinnamon essential oil. Both es…

An overall description of retinotopic mapping in the cat's visual cortex areas 17, 18, and 19.

1985

Mathematical functions are derived which model the retinotopic mapping in the cat's visual cortical areas 17, 18, and 19. All three mappings are simple modifications of a complex power function with an exponent of 0.43. This function is decomposed so as to give an intermediate stage which is common to all three mappings and can be regarded as a model of the lateral geniculate nucleus mapping. The influence of retinotopic mapping on visual receptive fields was studied. The results show that a dependence of the receptive field properties on the position in the visual field is to be expected.
