Deliberation favours social efficiency by making people disregard their relative shares: evidence from USA and India
2017
Groups make decisions on both the production and the distribution of resources. These decisions typically involve a tension between increasing the total level of group resources (i.e. social efficiency) and distributing these resources among group members (i.e. individuals' relative shares). This is the case because the redistribution process may destroy part of the resources, thus resulting in socially inefficient allocations. Here we apply a dual-process approach to understand the cognitive underpinnings of this fundamental tension. We conducted a set of experiments to examine the extent to which different allocation decisions respond to intuition or deliberation. In a newly developed app…

Current Predictive Resting Metabolic Rate Equations Are Not Sufficient to Determine Proper Resting Energy Expenditure in Olympic Young Adult National…
2021
Predictive resting metabolic rate (RMR) equations are widely used to determine athletes’ resting energy expenditure (REE). However, it remains unclear whether these predictive RMR equations accurately predict REE in the athletic populations. The purpose of the study was to compare 12 prediction equations (Harris-Benedict, Mifflin, Schofield, Cunningham, Owen, Liu’s, De Lorenzo) with measured RMR in Turkish national team athletes and sedentary controls. A total of 97 participants, 49 athletes (24 females, 25 males), and 48 sedentary (28 females, 20 males), were recruited from Turkey National Olympic Teams at the Ministry of Youth and Sports. RMR was measured using a Fitmate GS (Cosmed, Italy…

Intranasal midazolam for treating acute respiratory crises in a woman with stiff person syndrome.
2020
Stiff person syndrome (SPS) is a rare neurologic disorder characterized by progressively worsening rigidity and spasms of the axial and limb muscles. Dyspnea has been recently recognized as a common symptom in SPS,1 and life-threatening respiratory crises have been occasionally reported and suspected to be responsible for sudden death in these patients.2,3 The pathophysiologic mechanisms of these respiratory manifestations remain unclear. Some authors have hypothesized that rigidity and/or spasm of the muscles of the trunk could prevent normal rib cage movements and excursion of the diaphragm.1
15 Minute City Concept and Palermo Case Study
Sustainable urban mobility models and decarbonization in transportation have been discussed globally for decades. Yet the problem is not just decarbonization and the solution is not limited to green technology alone. Particularly, Covid-19 brought to light other important and ingrained problems of cities such as inequality of accessibility, the marginalization of some urban, peri-urban, rural territories and the emergence of social exclusion. In order to find a way out from these problems, practical, easily accessible, comfortable, and cheap alternatives should be provided to citizens and the use of private vehicles should be minimized. However, no matter how many alternative transportation…
15 Minute City Concept. A Glance at the Palermo Case Study
2022
Giving people opportunities for green technology and offering them new transportation modes are not sufficient methods for the transition to a sustainable mobility model. With the increasing importance of time, minimizing the daily travel time of people seems to be one of the crucial steps to be taken. 15 Minute City is one of the latest popular concepts assuring to reduce daily travel time and improve quality of life while enhancing environmental conditions. This paper will have a look at the concept regarding the case study of Palermo, one of the cities with the most intense traffic problems in Europe.
