Parameter sensitivity of flux-linkage based sensorless control for permanent magnet synchronous motors

2017

Sensorless control can be utilized to reduce cost, size and total complexity of a motor drive or enhance reliability of the system. This paper first presents a sensorless control algorithm for a surface permanent-magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) based on estimated flux linkages and stator currents. Within the algorithm, rotor position error can be predicted by comparing the estimated currents with measured stator currents. Performance of the sensorless control based on flux-linkages and the dependency of the algorithm on motor parameters is then numerically investigated via simulations. It is found from the investigation that the accuracy of the method depends on the motor working condition…

Addressing Manufacturing Challenges with Cost-Efficient Fault Tolerant Routing

2010

The high-performance computing domain is enriching with the inclusion of Networks-on-chip (NoCs) as a key component of many-core (CMPs or MPSoCs) architectures. NoCs face the communication scalability challenge while meeting tight power, area and latency constraints. Designers must address new challenges that were not present before. Defective components, the enhancement of application-level parallelism or power-aware techniques may break topology regularity, thus, efficient routing becomes a challenge. In this paper, uLBDR (Universal Logic-Based Distributed Routing) is proposed as an efficient logic-based mechanism that adapts to any irregular topology derived from 2D meshes, being an alter…

Light-induced nonthermal population of optical phonons in nanocrystals

2017

Raman spectroscopy is widely used to study bulk and nanomaterials, where information is frequently obtained from spectral line positions and intensities. In this study, we monitored the Raman spectrum of ensembles of semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) as a function of optical excitation intensity (optical excitation experiments). We observe that in NCs the red-shift of the Raman peak position with increasing light power density is much steeper than that recorded for the corresponding bulk material. The increase in optical excitation intensity results also in an increasingly higher temperature of the NCs as obtained with Raman thermometry through the commonly used Stokes/anti-Stokes intensity …

Structural Tuning and Conformational Stability of Aromatic Oligoamide Foldamers

2017

A series of aromatic oligoamide foldamers with two or three pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide units as their main folding motifs and varying aromatic building blocks as linkers have been synthetized to study the effects of the structural variation on the folding properties and conformational stability. Crystallographic studies showed that in the solid state the central linker unit either elongates the helices and more open S-shaped conformations, compresses the helices to more compact conformations or acts as a rigid spacer separating the pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide units, which for their part add the predictability of the conformational properties. Multidimensional NMR studies showed that, even in…

A thermally/chemically robust and easily regenerable anilato-based ultramicroporous 3D MOF for CO 2 uptake and separation

2021

The combination of the properly designed novel organic linker, 3,6-N-ditriazoyil-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (trz2An), with CoII ions results in a 3D ultramicroporous MOF with high CO2 uptake capacity and separation efficiency, with particular attention to CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 gas mixtures. This material consists of 1D chains of octahedrally coordinated CoII ions linked through the anilato ligands in the equatorial positions and to the triazole substituents from two neighbouring chains in the two axial positions. This leads to a 3D microporous structure with voids with an affinity for CO2 molecules and channels that enable the selective entrance of CO2 but not of molecules with larger kine…

Viewpoint: Atomic-Scale Design Protocols toward Energy, Electronic, Catalysis, and Sensing Applications

2019

Nanostructured materials are essential building blocks for the fabrication of new devices for energy harvesting/storage, sensing, catalysis, magnetic, and optoelectronic applications. However, because of the increase of technological needs, it is essential to identify new functional materials and improve the properties of existing ones. The objective of this Viewpoint is to examine the state of the art of atomic-scale simulative and experimental protocols aimed to the design of novel functional nanostructured materials, and to present new perspectives in the relative fields. This is the result of the debates of Symposium I "Atomic-scale design protocols towards energy, electronic, catalysis…

An Ecohydrological Cellular Automata Model Investigation of Juniper Tree Encroachment in a Western North American Landscape

2016

Woody plant encroachment over the past 140 years has substantially changed grasslands in western North American. We studied encroachment of western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis var. occidentalis) into a previously mixed shrub–grassland site in central Oregon (USA) using a modified version of Cellular Automata Tree–Grass–Shrub Simulator (CATGraSS) ecohydrological model. We developed simple algorithms to simulate three encroachment factors (grazing, fire frequency reduction, and seed dispersal by herbivores) in CATGraSS. Local ecohydrological dynamics represented by the model were first evaluated using satellite-derived leaf area index and measured evapotranspiration data. Reconstruc…

Environmental and biological factors are joint drivers of mercury biomagnification in subarctic lake food webs along a climate and productivity gradi…

2021

Subarctic lakes are getting warmer and more productive due to the joint effects of climate change and intensive land-use practices (e.g. forest clear-cutting and peatland ditching), processes that potentially increase leaching of peat- and soil-stored mercury into lake ecosystems. We sampled biotic communities from primary producers (algae) to top consumers (piscivorous fish), in 19 subarctic lakes situated on a latitudinal (69.0-66.5 degrees N), climatic (+3.2 degrees C temperature and +30% precipitation from north to south) and catchment land-use (pristine to intensive forestry areas) gradient. We first tested how the joint effects of climate and productivity influence mercury biomagnific…

Potential impacts of a future Nordic bioeconomy on surface water quality

2020

AbstractNordic water bodies face multiple stressors due to human activities, generating diffuse loading and climate change. The ‘green shift’ towards a bio-based economy poses new demands and increased pressure on the environment. Bioeconomy-related pressures consist primarily of more intensive land management to maximise production of biomass. These activities can add considerable nutrient and sediment loads to receiving waters, posing a threat to ecosystem services and good ecological status of surface waters. The potential threats of climate change and the ‘green shift’ highlight the need for improved understanding of catchment-scale water and element fluxes. Here, we assess possible bio…

Land Use Affects Carbon Sources to the Pelagic Food Web in a Small Boreal Lake

2016

Small humic forest lakes often have high contributions of methane-derived carbon in their food webs but little is known about the temporal stability of this carbon pathway and how it responds to environmental changes on longer time scales. We reconstructed past variations in the contribution of methanogenic carbon in the pelagic food web of a small boreal lake in Finland by analyzing the stable carbon isotopic composition (δ13C values) of chitinous fossils of planktivorous invertebrates in sediments from the lake. The δ13C values of zooplankton remains show several marked shifts (approx. 10 ‰), consistent with changes in the proportional contribution of carbon from methane-oxidizing bacteri…
