The use of spectral fluorescence methods to detect changes in the phytoplankton community

In vivo fluorescence methods are efficient tools for studying the seasonal and spatial dynamics of phytoplankton. Traditionally the measurements are made using single excitation-emission wavelength combination. During a cruise in the Gulf of Riga (Baltic Sea) we supplemented this technique by measuring the spectral fluorescence signal (SFS) and fixed wavelength fluorescence intensities at the excitation maxima of main accessory pigments. Phytoplankton in Lake Tanganyika — vertical and horizontal distribution of in vivo fluorescence

Determinations of chlorophyll a and in vivo fluorescence of photosynthetic pigments were used to study vertical and horizontal distribution of phytoplankton in Lake Tanganyika (East Africa). Blue excited fluorescence (IVFb) was an approximate predictor of chlorophyll a at different depths and locations. Green excited fluorescence (IVFg), which reflects phycoerythrin in cyanobacteria, explained chlorophyll a variation equally well, and in combination with IVFb the degree of explanation was improved to 87% (n = 90). Phytoplankton synthesizes essential ω-3 and ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) for consumers in the aquatic food webs. Only certain phytoplankton taxa can synthesize eicosapentaenoic (EPA; 20:5ω3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6ω3), whereas all phytoplankton taxa can synthesize shorter-chain ω-3 and ω-6 PUFA. Seasonal shifts between autochthonous and allochthonous carbon contributions to zooplankton diets in a subarctic lake

We addressed the extent to which autochthonous and allochthonous carbon sources contribute to zooplankton diet throughout the year in oligotrophic subarctic Lake Saanajarvi. Optical measures of dissolved organic matter (DOM) indicated high water discharge and associated terrestrial DOM during winter and low inputs in summer. Bulk particulate organic matter (POM) showed d13C values consistent with allochthonous inputs of DOM. The most positive POM d13C values (227%) occurred during winter, when heterotrophic bacteria and nanoflagellates peaked in abundance; the isotopically lighter autotrophic phytoplankton shifted the POM d13 Ct o229% in summer. Spatial patterns and β-diversity of phytoplankton assemblages depend on the relative importance of species dispersal capacity and species-sorting. Variability in species composition, composed by differences in species richness (nestedness) and/or species replacement, may be caused by niche availability and environmental selection. A field survey was carried out in Tibetan plateau on 38 lakes.
