Hierarchical Assembly of TiO2 Nanoparticles on WS2 Nanotubes Achieved Through Multifunctional Polymeric Ligands

2007

Thefunctionalization of nanotubes is required in order to bene-fit from their outstanding properties, as any application inmaterials and devices is hindered by processing and manipu-lation difficulties. Only the attachment of appropriate chem-ical functionalities on the nanotube surface allows tailoringof the properties for the respective applications. As an ex-ample, the enhancement of the nanotube solubility is onemajor task since most pristine nanotubes are insoluble inboth water and organic solvents. Thus, the improvement ofthe solubility by chemical functionalization is an importantconcept for synthetic chemists and materials scientists. Tai-loring of the surface chemical bonds might a…

CNT Arrays Grown upon Catalytic Nickel Particles as Applied in the Nanoelectronic Devices: Ab Initio Simulation of Growth Mechanism

2012

Carbon nanotubes, due to their exceptional and unique properties, have aroused a lot of research interest making them promising candidates as interconnects for future high-speed nanoelectronics. To predict a growth mechanism for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) upon a metal particle as synthesized in the porous membrane block then incorporated in the nanoelectronic device, we have performed a series of large-scale DFT-LCAO calculations using the CRYSTAL-06 code. Carbon adatoms can appear upon the densely-packed Ni(111) catalyst surface due to dissociation of hydrocarbon molecules (e.g., CH4) when applying the CVD method for the nanotube growth. We have started with adsorption properties of carbon at…

Quantum Transport and Current Distribution at Radio Frequency in Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes

2012

Multiwall carbon nanotubes represent a low-dimensional material that could serve as building blocks for future carbon-based nanoelectronics. The understanding of the electromagnetic performances at radio frequency of these materials for use in nanointerconnects is strictly related to the analysis of their transport properties as function of the working conditions. In this paper, we present an explicit expression of the conducting channels as function of diameter, temperature, doping, and supply voltage for both metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotubes. The proposed formula is based on the Dirac cone approximation of the conducting band energy of graphene nearby the Fermi points, combine…

Influence of cadmium on the morphology and functionality of haemocytes in the compound ascidian Botryllus schlosseri

2013

In order to get insights into the effects of cadmium (Cd) on cell morphology and functions, we exposed haemocytes of the colonial ascidian Botryllus schlosseri to sub-lethal concentrations of CdCl(2). Results indicate that Cd hampers haemocyte spreading and phagocytosis in a dose-dependent way, through the alteration of the actin cytoskeleton. In addition, the metal decreases the stability of the internal membranes, as revealed by the Neutral Red assay. The fraction of cells showing positivity for the lysosomal enzyme acid phosphatase is also reduced in the presence of Cd, whereas the number of cells responsive to the Annexin-V assay and showing chromatin condensation increases, suggesting …

Disconnected Graph Layout and the Polyomino Packing Approach

2002

Conference name: GD: International Symposium on Graph Drawing 9th International Symposium Date of Conference: 23–26 September 2001 We review existing algorithms and present a new approach for layout of disconnected graphs. The new approach is based on polyomino representation of components as opposed to rectangles. The parameters of our algorithm and their influence on the drawings produced as well as a variation of the algorithm for multiple pages are discussed. We also analyze our algorithm both theoretically and experimentally and compare it with the existing ones. The new approach produces much more compact and uniform drawings than previous methods. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg …

On two topological cardinal invariants of an order-theoretic flavour

2012

Noetherian type and Noetherian $\pi$-type are two cardinal functions which were introduced by Peregudov in 1997, capturing some properties studied earlier by the Russian School. Their behavior has been shown to be akin to that of the \emph{cellularity}, that is the supremum of the sizes of pairwise disjoint non-empty open sets in a topological space. Building on that analogy, we study the Noetherian $\pi$-type of $\kappa$-Suslin Lines, and we are able to determine it for every $\kappa$ up to the first singular cardinal. We then prove a consequence of Chang's Conjecture for $\aleph_\omega$ regarding the Noetherian type of countably supported box products which generalizes a result of Lajos S…

Topological characterization of virtual braids

2015

The purpose of this thesis is to give a topological characterization of virtual braids. Virtual braids are equivalence classes of planar braid-like diagrams identified up to isotopy, Reidemeister and virtual Reidemeister moves. The set of virtual braids admits a group structure and is called the virtual braid group. In Chapter 1 we present a general introduction to the theory of virtual knots, and we discuss some properties of virtual braids and their relations with classical braids. In Chapter 2 we introduce braid-Gauss dia- grams, and we prove that they are a good combinatorial reinterpretation of virtual braids. In particular this generalizes some results known in virtual knot theory. As…

Organic Fertilization in Traditional Mediterranean Grapevine Orchards Mediates Changes in Soil Microbial Community Structure and Enhances Soil Fertil…

2016

Soil microbial populations and their functions related to nutrient cycling contribute substantially to the regulation of soil fertility and the sustainability of agroecosystems. A field experiment was performed to assess the medium-term effect of a mineral fertilizer and two organic fertilization systems with different nitrogen sources on the soil microbial community biomass, structure, and composition (phospholipid fatty acids, pattern, and abundance), microbial activity (basal respiration, dehydrogenase, protease, urease, β-glucosidase, and total amount of phosphomonoesterase activities), and physical (aggregate stability) and chemical (total organic C, total N, available P and water-solu…

Intercomparison of gas emissions from the lava lakes of Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira, DR Congo

2015

From 25th of October to 5th of November 2014 field surveys were carried out at Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira volcanoes, DR Congo. These two volcanoes belong to the eight volcanoes in the Virunga volcanic chain. They have an altitude of about 3470 m.a.s.l. and 3060 m.a.s.l., respectively. The craters of the two volcanoes lie within a distance of less than 15 km and both have a diameter of about 1000 m and 2000 m, respectively showing a similar inner geometry containing several terraces inside. The lava lake of Nyamulagira is still under formation while Nyiragongo’s lava lake is known since more than 100 years with short interruptions after the eruptions in 1977 and 2002. However, also Nyamulagi…

2019 ESC Guidelines for the diagnosis and management of acute pulmonary embolism developed in collaboration with the European Respiratory Society (ER…

2020

Guidelines summarize and evaluate available evidence with the aim of assisting health professionals in proposing the best management strategies for an individual patient with a given condition. Guidelines and their recommendations should facilitate decision making of health professionals in their daily practice. However, the final decisions concerning an individual patient must be made by the responsible health professional(s) in consultation with the patient and caregiver as appropriate.
