Characterization of a cDNA encoding RP43, a CUB-domain-containing protein from the tube of Riftia pachyptila (Vestimentifera), and distribution of it…

2000

A major 43kDa protein from the protective tube of Riftiapachyptila (Vestimentifera), named RP43, was partly microsequenced after isolation by SDS/PAGE from the protein fraction of tubes collected around the hydrothermal vents at the East Pacific Rise. On the basis of the partial peptide sequences obtained, experiments using reverse-transcriptase-mediated PCR and rapid amplification of cDNA ends led to the complete cDNA sequence. Analysis of deduced amino acid sequence of RP43 showed the presence of CUB domains (100–110-residue-spanning domains first reported in the complement subcomponents C1r/C1s, epidermal-growth-factor-related sea urchin protein and bone morphogenetic protein 1) that se…

Cloning and expression of new receptors belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily from the marine sponge Geodia cydonium

1999

A cDNA encoding a receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) was previously cloned and expressed from the marine sponge (Porifera) Geodia cydonium. In addition to the two intracellular regions characteristic for RTKs, two immunoglobulin (Ig)-like domains are found in the extracellular part of the sponge RTK. In the present study it is shown that no further Ig-like domain is present in the upstream region of the cDNA as well as of the gene hitherto known from the sponge RTK. Two different full-length cDNAs have been isolated and characterized in the present study, which possess two Ig-like domains, one transmembrane segment, and only a short intracellular part, without a TK domain. The two deduced polyp…

A contrastive Analysis of the first Canto of Dante’s Inferno: an Examination of the Translations of Seamus Heaney and Ciaran Carson

2008

The article offers a comparative analysis of two English translations of the first Canto of Dante's Inferno: both produced by Irish authors, the two greatly differ. Specific translation strategies are examined in relation to the authors' distinctive poetic styles.

Maternal body mass index, gestational weight gain, and the risk of overweight and obesity across childhood: An individual participant data meta-analy…

2019

Background Maternal obesity and excessive gestational weight gain may have persistent effects on offspring fat development. However, it remains unclear whether these effects differ by severity of obesity, and whether these effects are restricted to the extremes of maternal body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain. We aimed to assess the separate and combined associations of maternal BMI and gestational weight gain with the risk of overweight/obesity throughout childhood, and their population impact. Methods and findings We conducted an individual participant data meta-analysis of data from 162,129 mothers and their children from 37 pregnancy and birth cohort studies from Europe, No…

Marine Discharges of Offshore Produced Water: the North-East Atlantic Management Strategy

2002

Volatile dilution during magma injections and implications for volcano explosivity

2016

Magma reservoirs underneath volcanoes grow through episodic emplacement of magma batches. These pulsed magma injections can substantially alter the physical state of the resident magma by changing its temperature, pressure, composition, and volatile content. Here we examine plagioclase phenocrysts in pumice from the 2014 Plinian eruption of Kelud (Indonesia) that record the progressive capture of small melt inclusions within concentric growth zones during crystallization inside a magma reservoir. High-spatial-resolution Raman spectroscopic measurements reveal the concentration of dissolved H2O within the melt inclusions, and provide insights into melt-volatile behavior at the single crystal…

Geochemical investigations applied to active fault detection in a volcanic area: the North-East Rift on Mt. Etna (Sicily, Italy)

1999

Geochemical investigations were performed on the Northeast Rift of Mt. Etna, a prominent volcanic structure of this volcano. Low-temperature fumaroles were found on the upper part of this area and the isotopic compositions of C(CO2) and He suggest a likely magmatic origin of the emitted gases. On the contrary, very low degassing was found in the lower part of the NE-Rift, with CO2 concentrations generally very close to those in air. This pattern is probably due to sealing of the eruptive fissures by the repeated injections of magma solidified into dikes and by consequent shallow hydrothermal alteration of the fissured rocks due to residual magma degassing. High soil CO2 concentrations were …

Floristic affinities between the somali and the mediterranean regions

1988

The phytogeographical connections between Somalia and the Mediterranean Region were analyzed. 99 families and about 300 genera turned out to be common to the two areas, representing 67 per cent of the families and 32 per cent of the genera in the whole Somali flora. If considering only the flora of the northern portion of Somalia, these values respectively reach 76 per cent of the families and 40 per cent of the genera. Furthermore several species are common to the two areas, some showing continuous distribution between eastern Africa and the Mediterranean Region, while others have strongly disjunct distribution.

Spatial and seasonal changes of dissolved and particulate organic C in the North Sea

2009

Sampling of the central region of the North Sea was carried out to study the spatial and seasonal changes of dissolved and particulate organic C (DOC and POC, respectively). The surface waters were collected during four cruises over a year (Autumn 2004–Summer 2005). DOC and POC concentrations were measured using high temperature catalytic oxidation methods. The surface water concentrations of DOC and POC were spatially and temporally variable. There were significantly different concentrations of DOC and POC between the inshore and offshore waters in winter and summer only, with no clear trend in autumn and spring. Highest mean concentrations of DOC were measured in spring with lower and sim…

La participación en asociaciones de los inmigrantes africanos. Vías de interpretación del distanciamiento asociativo

2013

This article is focused on the reasons for non-participation of African population in immigrant associations. To understand this question, we conducted semi-structured interviews with persons who decided consciously no to participate in associations and organizations that worked with immigrants. All this work was developed in Catalonia, Valencia and Navarra, from a multilocal research perspective. We interpret the associative detachment, as a voluntary distancing based on the absence of information, lack of time, disenchantment, proprietorship activism, passively waiting, or because they are the only user population. Nevertheless, there are other factors of greater significance, as the poli…
