Se analizan aquí algunos mecanismos de difusión de conocimientos agronómicos en una zona agraria de la periferia europea caracterizada por los elevados rendimientos del suelo. Se estudia también el papel de las élites rurales en este proceso, destacando la función de legitimación social que ese papel tenia en la sociedad liberal del siglo XIX. Legumes in 21st century Europe: present and future importance in agri-food systems? New challenges for reseach.

Intensification of agriculture since 1950 has globally led to the decline of grain legume crops, which currently represent less than 3 % of arable crops in France and Europe. Nevertheless, legumes have several major assets (i) as plant proteins for animal feed and human food and (ii) as plants fixing atmospheric N2 and thereby saving nitrogen inputs in cropping systems, and (iii) as diversification crops. The ways of introducing innovations into production were found as a result of conducted research on innovative activity at agricultural enterprises in the Ukraine. By means of the developed schemes, the stages of selecting an innovative product were shown and the need to transform the decision-making system in agricultural production was justified. Since the late 1950s the concept of human capital, understood as the stock of knowledge, skills, and abilities that determine individual productivity, has become one of the central tools with which economists explain both individual success and economic growth. During the latter half of the 20th century complementing concepts such as social capital, meaning the value of social networks and norms of reciprocity, and intangible capital, meaning the investments in knowledge and innovation generation, have emerged. This dissertation consists of introduction chapter and five empirical studies on European intellectual property rights institutions. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 are micro-level studies and the perspective shifts to macro-level in Chapters 5 and 6. Chapters 2, 3, 5 and 6 analyze two-tiered patent systems and Chapter 4 focuses on design rights. Chapter 2 analyzes the choice between patent and utility model protection among German firms. The results indicate that larger firms are more likely to use both protection methods and that a short life cycle of products and services is associated with an increased likelihood to use utility models.
