The Light Side of Passwords : Turning Motivation from the Extrinsic to the Intrinsic
2019
There are many good and bad aspects to password authentication. They are mostly without cost, securing many accounts and systems, and allowing users access from anywhere in the world. However, passwords can elicit dark side phenomena, including security technostress; with many users feeling negatively towards them, as they struggle to cope with the sheer numbers required in their everyday lives. Much research has attempted to understand users’ interactions with passwords, examining the trade-off between security, memorability, user convenience, and suggesting techniques to manage them better. However, users continue to struggle. Many studies have shown that users are more concerned with goa…
THE ROLE OF SEMANTIC BORROWING IN THE FORMATION OF ECONOMIC TERMS
2014
Specialized terms can result from a number of semantic processes (e.g. meaning extension, meaning narrowing, meaning transfer), which affect words from the general vocabulary. In their turn, these processes can be language internal and take place in the absence of any influence from the outside, or can be triggered by the importation of new things, ideas, etc from another culture and the contact with the language of this culture. The present paper analyses the way in which the worldwide influence English is exerting today has led to the creation of new words in the Romanian vocabulary of business and economics. Our sole focus of attention is constituted by semantic borrowing, or the importa…
L'uomo e il suo ambiente. Al di là dell'opposizione natura/cultura
2021

Problematyczne potomstwo "Pana Tadeusza" : wokół pewnego tekstu rocznicowego
2018
Progeny of “Sir Thaddeus” (1897), a less known essay by literary critic Cezary Jellenta [Napoleon Hirszband], presents an interesting attempt to discern and estimate novels of the 19th century Polish realists as originated from the great Mickiewicz’s poem. According to Jellenta, there are several social, national or aesthetic parallels existing between this famous epic work – a kind of architext and paradigm of Polish culture in general – and the well-known texts by Prus, Orzeszkowa, Sienkiewicz, Konopnicka or Witkiewicz, as well the unknown novel of Galician writer Alfred Nossig. Jellenta’s discourse and his often vague argumentation are involved both in traditional apology for Mickiewicz’…
2016
This article is about the artist John Piper's participation in one of the programmes for the preservation of national heritage that were organised during the Second World War. It focuses on Piper's paintings and texts – notably the articles that he contributed to the Architectural Review – in order to illustrate the aesthetic controversy between modernism and tradition, abstraction and naturalism, which underpins the ambivalence of reconstruction.
